Unfortunately for anyone hoping to completely maul a PS3 owner via Unreal Tournament 3, cross platform play between the PC and the PS3 will not be available at launch. According to an Epic representative, "The biggest challenge in doing cross-platform play is synchronizing the builds such that the build on the PC is 100% compatible with the build on the PS3. Unfortunately (or fortunately) when you [put] games on [a] console you have a lengthy certification process to go through each time you release anything new." Hence, every time someone tweaked the UT3 build, it would have to be certified for the PS3 before it could be released for the computer. And since Epic has it's computer-owning customers closer to its heart than those owning a PS3, the PS3 was forced to lose the interoperability. On the bright side, though, PS3 owners still get access to all the UT3 mods and user-created content that PC users make.

that is a shame, that is certainly a trick missed by Sony/Epic to offer cross platform gaming for free, no doubt this could hamper sales for the ps3 version at least.

I wonder whether the PS3 will get more/all maps due to Bluray like the PC or will have a trimmed version like the x360.

I ended up writing something semi-unrelated again...

the ps3 version can use all of the pc user created content, the xbox 360 cannot use any of it M$ wants people to buy maps updates and etc via micro transactions.

i am glad there wont be any immediate cross platform between ps3 and pc, that meas fewer whining and complaining about pc users skills because they are not stuck to a controller...

I don't know, I don't see how a total conversion mod could work on the PS3 like it would with a PC. UT3 must install something onto the PS3's HD before running to make something like that work otherwise the modding community would have to make a special executable or some such for it to work on the PS3, wouldn't they?

Unless the developer kit already makes the necessary changes for PS3, by default.

Seems like something Epic would waste their time doing. Why would they give such capability to the enemy after so many years of PC lovin'. Those traitorous bastards.

I wasn't looking for a truthful answer. =P Oh well, UT2k4 was kind of a let down after UT2k3 and the original. Not to mention those junkie Unreal Championship games.

I think it's more because the whole content doesn't fit on a DVD, I heard rumors about the full install being ~15-20GB (just rumours, didn't get asked in the IRC chat with the Epic devs and Mark Rein)

Why not support cross platform play with PS3 and the PC? Kind of retarded not to do that.

Before there was news that the ps3 will not have all the maps compared to the pc version due to hardware constants. Now new news say its gonna have all now. Plus with a keyboard and mouse support and a massive online ps3 community, i think we can live with out pc players. Also, cross platform is not forever lost, for the ps3 can accept patches that could enable cross-platform in the future.

The reason that the 360 cannot have mods is due to the closed network that LIVE is.
