I currently have a i5 8400, Asus prime B360m, RX 580 4gb and 2x8 G. Skill Aegis 3000cl16 running at 2666cl13.

Components I will keep is my SSD, evga 650GQ psu, bequiet dark rock slim cooler, Phanteks 300 case and Samsung S24F352 freesync (8nly hdmi so no Nvidia for me).

I am going to buy a RX 5700 soon, waiting for AIBs.

Considering upgrading to a better CPU and a i7 9700 65W with undervolt seems a good option. Ramspeed will bottleneck some, but with the tweaks I have applied will help a bit. I have a Aida64 latency of 52 (63 stock before tweaks, lowered tRFC from 480 to 350 timings from 16-18-18-38 to 13-16-16-32 and set CR to 1).

My options are:
I7 9700 for 380usd, sell my 8400 for 120usd.
Or
Ryzen 3600 for 240usd, Msi B450m gaming plus for 100usd and Crucial Ballistix 3000cl15 (can be tweaked to 3400-3600cl16) for 90usd, then I can sell ram, cpu and mb for around 200usd.

Ryzen upgrade will cost about 230usd, i7 9700 will cost about 260usd. What would you guys do? Speedwise I guess the i7 9700 even with some ram bottlenecling would be slightly faster than 3600 in gaming and quite similar in apps. I mostly play games.

With your current platform you can only move up to core i9900 and then you need to change both cpu and mobo to upgrade. The Ryzen Platform you can change just cpu over the life span of the platform. Atm x370 and higher end b350 motherboards support Ryzen 3000 (Zen 2 Series Parts).

they'll be about the same,so it's a coin toss.although remember that getting 3600 out of 3000 sticks on ryzen is a big maybe.
for 60hz you can stay on your 8400.

Then get a better GPU, I don't see the point of upgrading the CPU. IMO it would be a huge waste of money.

for 1080p/60hz 5700xt is overkill
he should get a better monitor instead

Hi, thx for replies. I dont plan on buying 5700XtT, going for the non-XT. Monitor i 48-75Hz freesync, with my RX 580 fps drops to about 40 (@1080p/medium/high) in demanding areas in SOTTR and it is not a good experience. Cyberpunk is a plan for next year, then I must have a new GPU I guess. Perhaps I'll just buy a RX 5700 and call it a day :) Upgrade to new system in a couple of years when ddr5 is out.

That's probably the smartest thing. As per this video

Anything beyond R5 3600 is of questionable value without an extreme GPU.

You are somewhat going for a side grade, check the specs of the cards, if you are serious id grab the xt or 5800 when it drops.

Make the platform jump in 2021.

According to TPU 5700 vanilla is 50-100% faster than my 580 4gb in everything. 5700XT is roughly 10-15% faster than the 5700 but I will probably run into CPU bottleneck so on my 9c the dufference between the 2 might be lower. If prices where I live are clise I opt for XT. If there is a large diffetence I go vanilla. Thx for advice :)

Not 100% better, its around 40% and the xt is 54%

If money is tight, you should be absolutely sure you're getting the most bang for your buck where it most counts, in your case gaming. So look around on ebay/amazon, there are some good deals out there, and you should definitely do your homework before jumping into an up/side grade.

According to this https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-5700/28.html a 580 8gb on average only get 60% og RX 5700 performance, which equals 5700 being 67% faster than 580 8gb. I have the slightly slower 4gb version of 580. In SOTTR 580 does 70 fps avg while 5700 does 117fps, compared to my card which does about 65fps that is close to twice as fast.

5700XT sounds a bit more appealing now, I will watch the prices on AIBs in the following days.

Depends on the 580s clock speeds, a 4G model can oc on average to 1430 and 2000-2100 on the ram, and look closely the 580 is at 60 and 5700 is at 100, only 40% difference and then the xt is 54% difference

that's 67% difference not 40%,100 is 1.67x of 60.
and 5700 overclocks too.

I kinda tried to tell him. I downclock/undervolt it a bit due to noise.

Ordered a 5700XT reference with a 10% discount. Usually costs 500usd where I live but got it for 440usd. Cheapest XT AUB costs 550usd so that was a bit too high. Will reduce boostclock a bit and undervolt it a lot, thx for advice :)

Got my 5700 XT yesterday, SOTTR reports a 80-90% GPU-bottleneck so the i5 8400 holds it`s ground. Performance is exactly twice of the RX 580 (110 fps vs 57 fps at same settings) so this should keep me going for a few years :) With a fps-lock at 60 consumption is identical to the 580, but the harsh drops Down into the 40-ish fps in populated areas is history and I don`t have to turn Down settings like hairquality, blur etc any more :)

Do you use Afterburner to max the clocks ?

If so, based upon TPus 20+ game test suite, overalll, the AIB 2070 is faster, quiter and cooler (not by a lot) than the AIB 5700 XTs ... and the same for the 5700 and 2060 so far ... will have to wait for the AIBs get tested till we know whats what there. Look at both, it will likely come down to which games you play ... Avoid the refence models they are 2.5 times as loud as the 2070s and I couldn't sit in the same room with them.

I use Afterburner to underclock/undervolt. My monitor dont have displayport, only AMD gives me freesync through hdmi. Nvidia is not an option since I really like freesync. With my current 1800MHz/950mv and modded fancurve noise are no problem and performance is about the same. Stock setting is no good noisewise.

AIB's 5700's XT come at $10 extra.

At where I live the cheapest aib XT costs 80usd more than what I paid for my card. Even the cheapest 5700 vanilla costs 40usd more than my card. If aid had cost 10usd more I would have gone for it, but 80usd is a bit too much.

If you can wait, give them few weeks and price should settle down.

Usually, you are right, but I got a demo-used card that was 50usd below cheapest XT blower, that was a good deal. Compared to stock XT aibs are only 30usd more, but that 50usd off made the difference. I dont live in US, but give you the value of my currency converted to usd :)
