Well I got my new monitor and now im starting to wonder if i should change my video card. I currently have a 4850x2 1gb which meens I only have 512mb per core. I like eye candy and running at 1920x1080 with all eye kindy on bogs me down. Im think the 512mb of ram is the culprit. Now would upgrading to card with more ram help me out? The 4870x2 is a little pricey but the 4850x2 2gb is priced nicely. I know it has a little less mem bandwith then the 4870x2 but I dont need the best. Second best is good enough for me. Plus I cant justify and extra 100+ dollars for gddr5 and a 100mhz boost on the core. ATI only for me by the way. Should I be happy with what I have or upgrade?

If you can wait it out, wait for the HD 5800's and get one of those. If not, I went from a 4850X2 to a 4870 1gb and all my games run the same, if not better at 1920x1080. I'm talking Left 4 Dead(maxed, 8x AA), EverQuest2, Call of Duty 4, Unreal Tournament 3 etc. Not sure what you're playing so.

Be happy with card you have, games run very well on HD4850 CF on 1920x1200 for me. No need to upgrade until RV870/R800 :)

hopefully sapphire will do a 5850x2 on the cheap like the 4850. is your 4850's 512mb's or 1gb?

EDIT:

Side note, finally hit 100 posts and it only took me about 5 years to do it. :)

The reason things are bogged down is because you have a 1GB dual GPU card, which means each GPU gets to use 512MB of RAM. At resolutions approaching 1920x1080 and higher, many modern games much prefer closer to 1GB of RAM.

In a state of flux...
With the price of 4870's at the moment if you did want to upgrade now then two of those wouldn't be out of your reach and cheaper than any 4870x2...

But...I'd wait for a little while and pick up a couple of 4870's when the new 5xxx series comes out as the price of the older generation will drop by a fair amount. :)

good idea, the 4870x2 will be cheaper then too. Only bad thing is any money that I get for my birthday will be spent by then. :)

Wait. Stick with what you have for now. If you invest in tech that is about to become second best in a couple of months you will be kicking yourself. Even if you cannot afford the latest tech, the prices of high-end current tech is going to drop like a fat bulldog tossed out of a pickup truck.
