I plan on upgrading my internet speed from (download|upload)6mb/s | 1mb/s to 16mb/s | 2mb/s. I have a linksys BEFSR41 router which is 10/100mb/s capable which goes to a 3com 8-port 10mb/s hub which then goes throughout my house with cat 3 cables.
I just bought a 10/100/1000 gigabit D-Link 8-port Switch to replace the old hub. If I use that router and switch AND the cat3 cables will i only get the 10 mb/s cat 3 limit when i want to get the 16mb/s from comcast? Will i have to replace all the cat 3 wiring with cat5+ to get the full potential, or should i just leave it? Running cables throughout my house is EXTREMELY difficult cuz it was built in 1922 and is 18,000 sq feet. My main question is will the cat 3 cables hold back the potential speed of my internet upgrade to 16 down and 2 up?
so heres how it goes(old)
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 3-->8-port 3com switch--->cat3----> pcs
How it will be (new)
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 3-->D-Link 10/100/1000 DGS-2208 switch--->cat3----> pcs
How i want it
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 5-->D-Link 10/100/1000 DGS-2208 switch--->cat5---->pcs
