I plan on upgrading my internet speed from (download|upload)6mb/s | 1mb/s to 16mb/s | 2mb/s. I have a linksys BEFSR41 router which is 10/100mb/s capable which goes to a 3com 8-port 10mb/s hub which then goes throughout my house with cat 3 cables.
I just bought a 10/100/1000 gigabit D-Link 8-port Switch to replace the old hub. If I use that router and switch AND the cat3 cables will i only get the 10 mb/s cat 3 limit when i want to get the 16mb/s from comcast? Will i have to replace all the cat 3 wiring with cat5+ to get the full potential, or should i just leave it? Running cables throughout my house is EXTREMELY difficult cuz it was built in 1922 and is 18,000 sq feet. My main question is will the cat 3 cables hold back the potential speed of my internet upgrade to 16 down and 2 up?

so heres how it goes(old)
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 3-->8-port 3com switch--->cat3----> pcs

How it will be (new)
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 3-->D-Link 10/100/1000 DGS-2208 switch--->cat3----> pcs

How i want it
linksys 10/100 router--->cat 5-->D-Link 10/100/1000 DGS-2208 switch--->cat5---->pcs

I have the 16Mb \ 1Mb + the same router if it's version 3 and i get 16Mb \1Mb if not a little more depending were you are downloading from.

As for getting 16mb/s | 4mb/s well not available to me yet. All though there beta test site says i get upto 3Mb \up which is the only place i get it all though i have had my download speed faster than the pic shown at the end of this post.. In fact been thinking of downgrading my self to save $10 as that speedboost BS is pointless 99% of the time for me.

Maybe reseting the modem will apply a update that comcast has sent you as i have had no issue with the router in question. All so if you get in toutch with Linksys they should have a beta bios for it too( not listed on there site).

The CAT cable we use is 5 and 6 and have no difference for our usage.

Your 10Mb cabling will definately limit your max download speed, so 100Mb would be advised to get the most from your ISP.

With regard to "fixing" your Cat3

The short answers is: test it and see

The long answer is:

Although cat3 cable is only rated for a max transmission speed of 10Mb/s you may find that 100Mb will work perfectly well, especially if your cable lengths are well under the maximum of 100 metres.

For 1000Mb/s you will almost certainly have to replace your cabling with Cat 5+.

Here are some tips to get the best from yout Cat3 should you find that 100Mb/s partially works:

1. Re-terminate your cables with new plugs/sockets.
2. When you re-terminate, make sure that you maintain the cable twist right up to the plug/socket.
3. If all else fails, use your Cat3 cable to pull a new Cat5+ cable into place (will only works if Cat3 cable run is free to move and not wrapped around joists etc)
