as title states, upgrading CPU to 5950X

recommended steps needed to do? Or I can just pull out and put the new CPU?

my MOBO is Asus Crosshair viii hero wifi
Bios 3801
fTPM enabled for windows 11.

OS: dual boot Windows 11 and Linux

I dont worry about Linux. What worries me is breaking windows 11 :-p

To all MOD, pls move to appropriate Subforum if needed. tnx

TIA

i'd update the bios first (your version supports Zen 3 but it's still quite old)
but it should be just a drop in replacement.

Be sure you got an adequate PSU, reset/update the BIOS and you should be good to go.

Well it is x570 so your BIOS will support the 5950x no problem since the board supports 5950x(Vermeer) from 2311 BIOS version

If you haven't already bought the 5950x, wait for the 5900/5950x3d.

Not a bad advice. I would wait as well. If you don't get the x3d for whatever reason, the 5950x might drop in price anyway.

Ive got a 1000W PSU so it shouldnt be an issue

Well I already bought it :) Bought for 400 from a colleague. He accidently bought 2, silly him. He couldnt return for some reason. So I offered 400 and he accepted it...... Bnew so I couldnt pass it :)

BIOS update before changing CPU and make sure your cooling is good (I see it is a 360 AIO, so plenty there).

I've built 100+ 3900X rigs and dozens of 5950X rigs. Whilst both pull the same power at stock settings, the 5950X really can make good use of more. I feel that a PPT of 175W is closer to its sweet spot than the 142W default that AMD limit it to out of the box. At 142W stock PPT you're losing a good 10% of the multi-threaded performance. IMO, if the 5700X is close to the sweet spot at an 88W PPT, then twice that should apply to the 5950X (176W)...

You can push it as hard as your cooling allows but heat output increases exponentially whilst performance gains suffer diminishing returns. If you set a manual PBO to 175W you're going to be getting 98% of the potential your CPU has and it should still run cool/quiet/efficiently.

760W would not have an issue if a decent PSU. Your CPU is going to use approximately same power as mine 5800x maybe a tad more but that's like few Watts more.

Well, I can get my 5900X to suck back over 200w.. I would imagine he would be able to do the same.. I am not sure where they got their 105w rating

AMD's PPT is 1.35x the TDP before PBO. That's been the official line from AMD for several years now.

Since most motherboards enable PBO by default when you drop an X-series chip into it, you're basically getting an auto-overclock out of the box on a CPU that's rated to pull 142W at stock.

I agree, wait and se if there are comming a 5950X3D. Specially if you game as well or the more likely 5900X3D to come.

Also by waiting for a possible 5950X3D and zen 4 for to come. I think there will be a good chance of getting a used 5950X for cheaper by then. Cause there will be people moving from 5950X to 5950X3D or to a Zen 4 setup. It could also be amd would release a 5950XT, but I have not seen any rumors or speak of such a cpu. So thats just my guessing.

With that said, I have a 5950X and it's deffently a sweet cpu, specially for workstation and multitasking work and off cause chugging happily throw games. With enough Colling. They can oc as well. I got my 5950X up to 4.65 ghz on all cores with aircooling, all throw I was also at the limit before thermal throttle. But my point is that a 5950X can definitely be aircooled with a good dual tower cooler like the noctua nh-d15 chromax.black i use my self.

I'm sure you can but why would you do that? Everybody knows the best way is to just leave the autoboost manage the AMD CPU. Switch PBO on if you must and just leave it. It wont pull more than 200W for sure. If you set the vcore high and OC it in some way it might but what's the point?

I believe the OP will be fine with the 5950X, I picked up a 3950X here not long ago and it's been a great chip - Runs cool and seems like it's a strong one from the testing I've done with it.
This one with my IceGiant cooler doesn't get overly warm under load and I agree, a good aircooler for regular use should be fine for a 5950X without the hassles of an AIO or watercooling in general.

Using this chip as reference to compare it to a 5950X tells me the OP will enjoy that chip and made a really good buy, I would have jumped all over that if I had seen it when I was browsing for a different chip at the time I got the one I have now.

I'm gonna run this one for awhile, I can't see me needing another one for sometime to come barring actual hardware failure.

Are we certain those are going to be produced? when Zen 4 is so close to release?

All about the GFlops..

If that is what everyone thinks, then everyone is wrong :D

You need the power for sustained top of the range ST/MT performance.

Those are still rumors, however AMD has officially told they are not finish with AM4 yet. So the 3D models i would say are not unlikely at least. Some rumors even suggest there will be a few Zen 4 based cpu to AM4 all throw those will be for the low end segment while the 3D models will be the highend and maybe mid-end as well with a 5600X3D.

But there are no official comformation from AMD as of today yet. But based on that AMD has told they are not done with AM4 support yet. I will say the 3D cpu´s are not unlikely and perhaps Zen 4 dies that can not keep the official clock for the AM5 chip and maybe chiplets with deffective cores could make up a good quad-core option for AM4 as the current quad-core models are fairly rare for AM4 to find.

1kW is more than enough. Hell, I have a 550W unit and no problems with 3600 & 1080 Ti OC/OV :D
