Upgrading GPU or monitor?

Hello guys. I was wondering whats my next best move for an upgrade. I recently got a Ryzen 5 5600 and I wanted to upgrade my GPU next, but now having tested a 180hz display its astonishing how much better it is than my 75hz display.


I mainly play FPS and competitive games at the lowest settings and rarely play GPU intensive games, though playing Delta Force, CoD and Battlefield really does require some GPU horsepower.



My build:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600

Gigabyte A320M-H (rev 1.x)

G.Skill Aegis 2x8GB 3000 MT/s

Asus TUF Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Gaming OC

Thermaltake BX1 550W 80+ Bronze



My current display: Dell 27 inch 75hz monitor

What is your budget? Personally I'd say 4070 or 7800XT minimum. Maaaybe 7700XT if cheap. Don't go lower or you will regret it. Then buy used instead. 3070/3080 including Ti or 6800/6800XT/6900XT etc.

You might get CPU bound tho, if you want to max that refresh rate and 5700X3D/5800X3D should be on your list if your board supports it.

Tbh i only saw rx 6600/7600 fitting my budget rn... So its one of these or a 144hz display..

You’ll want to upgrade both, eventually, obviously. Good thing a monitor is something that can last you a looooong time and through multiple GPU upgrades. And if, as you said, you are into competitive games primarily, the monitor is a more significant upgrade for you anyway.

I did the both at the same time in 2022, bought a 6700 XT and a 4K60 monitor. Though later I bought an used 4K120 monitor and an used RTX 3080, this time separately.

Well 144+ Hz should be a priority 100% if you are into shooters.

How many fps you get when you play?
If you get 120 with your 1660, then get the monitor first.
If you get 75....probably go for the gpu first.
I would look for a second hand gpu better than a new 600/7600, if possible.

A 7600 costs 200 euro CHEAPEST, second hand. A 6600 second hand is like 140-170. Everything else is out of my budget.

A 1660 is flagged as a solid 1080p contender. Better than my RX 580 by a fair margin and the only gaming I do is 1080p144 desktop and (upscale) 2K90 VR.
I'm still on a single 24" display too. Which camp are you in that you are looking into a new GPU and monitor?
If your frames suck, you're probably going to pick the GPU first.
If you hate looking at the current display, maybe a new monitor is in order.
Either way, a 75Hz monitor to anything is going to feel incredibly jarring.

I'm betting you'll pick GPU first but if your market is sub-$200 that's gonna hurt real bad.
All I think of in that range is the 5700XT and I've been on the fence about it a few times just because I want a better encoder.
It's probably not worth the trouble unless you need lots of FP64 and even then, the 6700XT obsoleted it.
I would wait until $250-350 becomes reasonable and then snipe a 6750XT refurb or 3060 12GB or one of the water cooled 2080 Super cards that can't seem to move off the shelf.
Something looks very weird about that.

It's just over your price but it would probably be the way to go. Instant 2x performance jump, introduction to new tools and features and it would agree with the rest of the hardware.
It's really tempting.

Well the RX 7600 is actually better than the RX 5700XT by not even a little amount not gonna lie... And i found a second hand rx 7600 for 200.

What FPS are you getting in the games you are playing now on your 1660? if you can drive a 144hz panel for the settings you play at then it makes sense to go monitor first for competitive shooters at least anyway, then you will have unlocked your next mission, save for a GPU, sometimes we can't do these things all at once, I have been there many times myself and have upgraded bit by bit, in all honesty my current rig started out as a a320 board and Athlon APU, 8GB RAM etc when I was really broke though needed a system, upgraded to a 1600 AF, b350 motherboard, 16GB RAM, B550 motherboard and Ryzen 5500, then my current 5700x, 32GB RAM, Corsair Shift RM750x etc etc it's the same system I have been using for years with none of the original parts that I started out with lol

I get around 100-140 fps in the games i currently play. Id love to play some new games that came out with some higher settings but competitive games are 100% priority.

Then get the 144hz monitor, and hold doff on the GPU, since you can hit 140 fps already.

Both components are perfectly OK to use for several more years.
If I were to upgrade one of the components it would probably be the GPU.
AMD GPUs outperform Nvidia in the games you list.
