XPadder will work with win 7 and most modern games, don't quote me on the games but im confident it will as it simulates keyboard and mouse I believe.

If there's still a free version (While since i used it) why not just try it?

Yeah it works. Just go dig around for the ms driver for the xbox 360 controller and not the one ms updates installs .

Same reason i still use my N64 controller i guess, because he likes it?

liking something and making it work are 2 different things. I loved my SS 3GC but inputting layouts to all my games was an annoying chore, so i bought a 360 pad and havent looked back since (main reason BF3 and 4 for flying).

Thanks for the replies.

Been traveling, trying figure out the best/first option for when I get home to my desktop rather than rolling the dice. X360ce and XPadder seem like the most viable, already DL'd both.

Unfortunately there's a method to the madness and it isn't pure preference.

I was born without my left hand, but I have part of my forearm that I've always used to operate the L stick and/or D-Pad.

Never had an issue gaming until the advent of left triggers and bumpers, they are my nemesis. Though far from ideal, I can use my left knee to single press or hold the left trigger, but anything rapid or well-timed is not gonna happen. The left bumper, it might as well not exist to me and that's why I haven't just bought a 360 pad and called it a day.

I'm hoping that being able to program and use the black and white buttons on the original XBox pad with my right thumb will let me game optimally, hence the reason for the post.

With a non-360 XBox controller? If so, will I be able to program the buttons?

Considering the above, any new advice?

If not couldn't you find general HID drivers? Im assuming if youve got it hooked up through USB it'l be using a HID interface, i think (Please don't quote any of that i just remember something along those lines i could be completely mistaken.)

This might be helpful, it mentions a driver on the last page

http://www.ocmodshop.com/how-to-use-an-xbox-controller-as-a-usb-pc-gamepad/3/

Also someone in the comments recommended people to use xpadder when they couldn't get it recognised naivety in game i think so may be something?

Thanks, will research basic HID drivers and give the driver link a shot.

I followed a similar guide to make my controller a few years ago and have had it working perfectly on XP with XBCD since.

But, there are XBCD driver signing issues with Win 7 and everyone who was interested in this topic has seemingly moved on.

Probably gonna bite the bullet and go the trial and error route starting with x360ce when I get home.

If x360ce detects your pad you should be able to map buttons how you wish but not all games play nice with x360ce so the second option to try is xinput 3.0 :) both work really well in most cases.
