Using Arctic Silver 5 on a gpu

Hey, could you guys offer any advice on applying AS5 to a 7800gt? I used it when applying my zalman 700alcu? It will sometimes burst to like 55 idle or higher at 100% fanspeed. If I slow down the fan even half way, it overheats. All kinds of stability problems. Also other problems. I'm wondering if I put it on wrong. I never used the card without the zalman, so I can't be sure that the card wasn't defective before.

So you are RMA'ing it because you screwed up and put to much paste on. Thereby cutting Neweggs profits , that will be reflected on the rest of us, because you want to exploit the process.

Yeah, you made a good point. I sounded like a jerk there. Though I was speaking a bit tongue-in-cheek. I don't actually think I scewed it up, though I can't actually be sure because I never ran it before installing the zalman. And I mean honestly, its not like their that hard to install. And I wasn't really all that descriptive of the problem. I should have also mentioned that sometimes the temps are fine (like 40), but will then shoot up to 55 for no apparent reason.

So, maybe it was screwed up before, maybe it wasn't. But that's why I buy at newegg, even if I could get it somewhere else for a little less. Security. Yes, its possible that I'm the one that screwed up and newegg has to eat it, but I also buy EVERYTHING from newegg. That's why they made it part of their business plan to give the customer the benefit of the doubt--they get loyal customers who will shop with them for years and recommend them to all of their friends.

Though I do see your point. It would be shameful for someone to regularly abuse their willingness to give RMAs.

55 load is actually good. 6/7 series cards are around 70 celsius load usually. The card was probably damaged from the start.

But next time use this stuff. Its non conductive and non capacitive, so its safe if you accidentally get some on the circuits. Its supposed to cool a little better too.

i agree with wazzledoozle.use ceramique next time.
and dont worry about RMA.thats the reason it exists...

Hey naseltzer,
I have my 7800GT at stock speeds with the stock cooler. At idle it stays around 37C and during load it is around 55C-60C (I have a PCI fan right below it). It could prob. be lower, but my wire management sucks and I am too lazy to open her up right now.

Yeah. I use the ciramique. It works pretty well. Combined with my NV silencer my 6800 GS only gets to 48~C load, and over clocked to 509MHz core and 611/1222MHz memory.

it depends on which cpu.you wont have any problem using AS on an Intel cpu because it is "protected " by the heatspeader.but on an AMD cpu and on many gpus you must be extra carefull with all the circuits around.if AS touches them bye bye.
thats the reason of using ceramique in these cases.its non conductive and non capacitive so its safer if accidentally you do sth. wrong.

any amd cpu newer than a socket-A athlon XP has almost the exact same heatspreader over its top as the intel cpu's.

just giving a general example there..

here is G70.no heatspreader.
if AS touches a circuit around the core..zzzzzzzzz
