Apparently, Valve Corp. has found a fault with VAC and has reversed the bans of several players of Modern Warfare 2. In addition to lifting the ban, the affected people will be receiving free copies of L4D2 to gift to someone over Steam and a free copy of L4D2 for themselves if they don't already own the game.

Glad to see good customer service at work and Valve own up to a mistake.

Good news for those people... and luckly it was Valve, so not only will they fix it but they will throw out some nice goodies to those affected.:rockout:

Hello,

Recently, your Steam account was erroneously banned from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

This was our mistake, and I apologize for any frustration or angst it may have caused you.

The problem was that Steam would fail a signature check between the disk version of a DLL and a latent memory version. This was caused by a combination of conditions occurring while Steam was updating the disk image of a game. This wasn't a game-specific mistake. Steam allows us to manage and reverse these erroneous bans (about 12,000 erroneous bans over two weeks).

We have reversed the ban, restoring your access to the game. In addition, we have given you a free copy of Left 4 Dead 2 to give as a gift on Steam, plus a free copy for yourself if you didn't already own the game.

To share your extra copy of Left 4 Dead 2 with a friend, you can 'Manage Gifts and Guest Passes' from the 'Games' Menu in Steam, or visit this article on the Steam Support site for detailed instructions: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=4502-TPJL-2656.

To access your own copy of Left 4 Dead 2, visit your library of games in Steam. If you didn't already own the game, it will now be listed among your others there, and is available for download immediately.

Thanks for posting the email.

Well that is one developer with integrity. :rockout:

Any others? Doubt it!

One of the many reasons i love Valve and Steam. Awesome.

Valve is so awesome.

Years ago I sent Gabe an email. Much to my surprise I actually got a response back asking for my address. They sent me a handwritten letter, a HL2 hat signed by Gabe himself, and a boxed GI-Joe.

I just about shit myself when box from Valve showed up.

if someone wants to gift me a copy that would be awsome. hehe i'm poor atm

ha they gave them free l4d2 game. its only 10 bucks! they should've hooked them up with another game or something. VAC is a joke. valve is sort of a joke when it comes to the community. just saying

IW is a joke to let all administration be all done with VAC, rather than having dedicated servers and its owners being the admins.

bring on all the people who said they were banned for no reason

What? L4D2 is $29.99, and they got a free copy and 1 too give away, thats $60 x 12,000 bans.

Valve is showing more Integrity than most!

i really like valve even tho sometimes their delivery system for game releases is a bit bugged. they actually make games that are fun to play for years on end and they are building their software for the linux platform.

Where is Ford to trash Valve?

But it is a Valve game, so it is $0 x 12,000 bans.

I'm sure everyone would rather get a $60 check in the mail. But it comes down to, most likely those people still want to play MW2, and Steam could have easily just said "hey guess what, you guys are un-banned our bad", and not given them anything. The odds of those people not using Steam anymore is slim, if they got banned for no reason and still use it, then why even give anything away?

It may mean less revenue lost to them because they made the game, but it also means no revenue gained, they just gave out 24,000 L4D2 keys, and I'm sure some of the people that get those keys would have spent $30 on the game, thats a lot of keys they gave out, I'm sure most people will just be happy to play MW2 again, L4D2 with a free copy to play with a friend is nice.
