NVIDIA has announced that they are partnering with Valve to bring its Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) graphics technology to Linux via Steam Proton. This will allow Linux gamers with an RTX GPU to take advantage of the AI tool to improve their framerates in games through Steam. Proton is an open-source tool from Valve which allows Windows games to be run on Linux, the tool is built into the Linux Steam Client Beta. This news comes after AMD announced their open-source DLSS competitor FidelityFX Super Resolution which supports AMD, and NVIDIA graphics cards.

NVIDIA said:
NVIDIA, Valve, and the Linux gaming community are collaborating to bring NVIDIA DLSS to Proton - Linux gamers will be able to use the dedicated AI cores on GeForce RTX GPUs to boost frame rates for their favorite Windows Games running on the Linux operating system. Support for Vulkan titles is coming this month with DirectX support coming in the Fall.

wow.. now thats something different. Nvidia should accelerate and provide more support for wayland instead. Or better yet, open their drivers. Im sure alot of linux users can even code better than only nvidia

nVidia are scared... very scared by AMD's FSR. All these DLSS announcements recently...

Had to laugh when AMD showed off FSR on an nVidia 1060!

Why should they be scared. FSR looks worse than DLSS 1.0 and DLSS 1.0 sucked, 2.0 is what brought something great and innovative, which relies on AI and tensor cores

I doubt Nvidia is scared about a spatial upscaler, this is nothing new

FSR will never be able to do what DLSS does;

And this is why every GPU can use FSR. Just an upscaler. DLSS is far more than that.

Resolution scale 70% + 40% sharpening. Working on all games not only selected FSR titles.

How can you say it is worst when it is not even out yet? There maybe some leaks but think about it, it is just start. once it get matured, it will just get better. And you wont need a new gpu to get that new generation

Did you read the arcticle? It's from AMDs own presentation and it's blurry, even with heavy compression you can easily see how blurry it is.

What will get better? It's spatial upscaling, nothing new and nothing to improve on pretty much

I am looking forward to see a full comparison with DLSS 1.0 and especially DLSS 2.x tho

No leaks , it comes directly from AMD themselves and it's blury very blury . Yes you don't need new GPUs to run it but that's the point they chose to go with the technique that fits the lower common denominator hence the inferior image quality . There is no magic into it FSR is just a spacial uscaler no matter what AMD does to it , it will be vastly inferior to DLSS 2.0 or eventual DLSS upgrades . AMD needs to come out with their own deep learning solution , FSR is just lazy attempt to provide what peoples have been asking for ( DLSS equivalent ) and is far from fitting the bill !

Yelp...Nvidia proliferating their superior upscaling tech out into the world is seen as getting scared by AMD fanbase .
I mean AMD is probably paying developers not to integrate DLSS into AMD sponsored titles at this point, conversely Nvidia is not doing that (Death Stranding and CP2077 still have FidelityFx)

You missed the point, and the few hundred million games consoles out there that will support it... Really. And I never said FSR was better or worse than nVidias offering, that's all on you. FTR FSR is clearly inferior, and I personally preferer DLSS, but we have to remember just how crap DLSS v1.0 was, and it's only got good a couple of months ago, so AMD have a year or more to get FSR better.

On a more fun note... I see the NV fanbois feels got hurt? I can see a few crying, but better not argue with the supporters opinions here... Whatever crap they say.

Chill. Console games largely had their own temporal upscaling techniques. Good checkerboarding takes a trained eye on 65" 4k displays side by side to even pick out (Digital Foundry's own words and experiences, not mine). They don't need an upscaler - consoles used to have hardware upscalers built in (Xbox 360). They dropped it for good reason - developers have long had better tools than spatial upscaling.

I can see Nvidia just let their sponsored games get FSR support since it benefits Pascal owners, however I highly doubt AMD would let their sponsored titles adopt DLSS 2.0 , that would be AMD shooting themselves in the foot.

Logic and common sense thrown at the window when you wrote this? lmao.
DLSS being used with an AMD sponsored game? a game that would be advertised by AMD, have DLSS that ONLY Nvidia RTX cards can use? what?? lmaooo, FidelityFx is OPEN SOURCE, IT CAN BE USED BY ANY GRAPHICS CARD, whether AMD or Nvidia, that's why CP2077 and Death stranding use it, old GTX that can't use DLSS and Vega cards etc can benefit from FidelityFx so it's Neutral, can be used in any game, by any card, it's not even special, just sharpening thing that lets old cards run at lower res, and still have some sharpness to the image.

AMD sponsored games using DLSS that AMD cards can't and will never be able to use is STUPID, the game might as well just become an Nvidia sponsored at that point..

I have a 3080 and a 6900XT, so im not a fanboy, because it's also stupid when AMD users ask Metro Exodus Devs to add FSR support, while the game is Sponsored by Nvidia, but FSR is open source, so they might actually do it, it'll be useful for GTX users as well as AMD Vega and Rx 500 cards and even RX 6000 when RT is on.

No, that would be called stealing NVs intellectual property. Or is it bad AMD, their so crap because they don't want a lawsuit with NV over proprietary NV property?

Dude, open source mean Nvidia can use the same code as FidelityFX and call it a different name, not that it affect game integration a bit. Metro Exodus EE already use Temporal Upsampling, which support AMD GPU already, why should they integrate FSR if the performance/Image quality is the same as Temporal Upsampling in the first place?

Any game devs can just ask Nvidia to send DLSS plugin, which they can integrate into their games but not to make any changes to the DLSS code. AMD just won't let that happen to their sponsored titles though.

Don't nVidia insist on exclusivity on the titles they give DLSS (and their various other black box plugins) to?

There is no point for Nvidia to block game devs from including other upscaling tech, since it's gonna be free marketing for DLSS anyways.
Game devs can just download the DLSS plugin freely, sign a EULA and that's it. Since integrating DLSS is helping Nvidia specifically I don't know why Nvidia would make fuss
