Way to disable PCI-E link state changing?

Is there a way to disable it from changing to 1.1?
I turned link state off in power options, EnableUlps to 0 and disabled pcie spread spectrum in the bios, it still goes into 1.1 mode.

why are you trying to do this?
 
Good question... System use to set PCIe speed automatically according current load, right?

I do believe so, but never really wondered what the benefit was for that, lower power consumption in 1.1? Definitely a good question.
 
Indeed years go this was happing to me and was pointed out[think even w1zzard chimed in] that it's just part of the system managing the bandwidth under load's.

    I was scouring the internet for the reason the version changes, but came up empty.


    I'm guessing it has to do with power saving, good analogy is speed step/turbo mode on a CPU. It does draw some additional power run the PCIe bus speed at full throttle.


    Summary of PCI Express Interface Parameters:
    • Base Clock Speed: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GHz, PCIe 2.0 = 5.0GHz, PCIe 1.1 = 2.5GHz
    • Data Rate: PCIe 3.0 = 1000MB/s, PCIe 2.0 = 500MB/s, PCIe 1.1 = 250MB/s
    • Total Bandwidth: (x16 link): PCIe 3.0 = 32GB/s, PCIe 2.0 = 16GB/s, PCIe 1.1 = 8GB/s
    • Data Transfer Rate: PCIe 3.0 = 8.0GT/s, PCIe 2.0= 5.0GT/s, PCIe 1.1 = 2.5GT/

Gpus only ramp up when demand is needed, it's encoded in the driver to do it. I believe modifying the driver to force the gpu to use 2.0 link state or faster at all times is possible and safer instead of modifying the bios and fucking up the card beyond all recognition.

Example, my gpu unloaded runs at 300/350, ram i believe around 150 or something like that at 1.1 Bus speed, in gaming it ramps to 1030/1400 with max bus speed of my board at 2.0. I feel it's the algorithms in the driver doing this.

I'm guessing you're right. The other possibilities are the MB sensing PCIe data rate demand, or additional power draw from the PCIe, but not likely.

I wonder if the Chipset drivers have any play in this too.
