I am having trouble with my WD640. It is sometimes disconnecting when the system is running and sometimes isn't visible upon startup. It is my secondary drive, but still have important info.
I need to disconnect and connect to make it visible, and that doesn't always work the first time.

HD Tune Pro: WDC WD6400AAKS-22A7B0 Error Scan

Scanned data : 595 GB
Damaged Blocks : 0.2 %
Elapsed Time : 2:04:14
1 Error at 2833 MB (LBA 5803725)
2 Error at 181700 MB (LBA 372123096)
3 Error at 256915 MB (LBA 526163012)
4 Error at 455337 MB (LBA 932531960)

Under Health Tab in HDTune Pro, Current Pending Sector has a warning status.

I got a WD 1Tb drive to try to image everything onto it, but both DriveImage XL and Paragon Backup & Recovery failed.

Run WD Data Lifeguard for Windows. If it gives you error with # contact WD for replacement with that #. You should always run diagnostic program offered by the maker of the HD.

Saving contents to another drive is a good first move. SEE Acronis True Image, same page.

Sounds like the drive is failing. One easy thing to check for are bad cables, so replace the power and data cables and see how it goes.

Am I right in saying that you had just one copy of your data and that you're trying to copy it now that it's giving problems? If so, then that's the wrong strategy.

Keep at least two copies of your data on separate hard drives at all times and back them up regularly, say once a day or perhaps more often. Otherwise, it's simply data that you haven't lost yet, as you're finding out.
