I just bought myself a new rig with this hard drive (WD6401AALS).

I am concerned because it is making a high pitch screeching sound, it happens randomly
specially during times of accessing and writing.
should i be concerned at all?

I checked for damage blocks and it shows none.

Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure it's the hard drive? I have 2x AALS drives and none of them do that

Run HDtach or HDtune on it and see if she makes noises and what the benches say as far as pssible errors.

High pitched screeching sound in HDD = Bad bearings in the HDD. RMA time.

I faintly remember hearing some high pitched sounds coming from my 2 AALS when I first got them, but I think it went away.

I have 2 WD Blacks 500GB in RAID 0 and they have never made any noises like you have mentioned.

If it doesn't work rk RMA it.

Technology wise the WD Blacks are very good.

i think i found the problem, it is not the hard-drive, its coming from inside the power supply.

i have a corsair: HX620W

what should i do?

If the power supply is in warranty (it should be, Corsair has a 5 year warranty), RMA the power supply. Expected turn around time is about 2 weeks, so you might want to pick up a spare PSU for the mean time.

I had a feeling that it wasn't the hard drive. TBH as long as the corsair psu still works, there's nothing wrong with it. Squealing psu's under load is nothing new, but is annoying. Corsair does allow RMA for this reason. However, there's no guarantee that the new unit won't squeal as well
