All,

So, I got this really strange problem happening on a couple of machines and I was wondering if anyone's seen it or knows of a cause/fix. The issue is is when I copy and paste a file and/or folder from any location on my device to another other location (say for example if I copy a file from my D: drive or a network share onto my desktop) the file doesn't appear immediately, even though the copy has happened successfully. I have to F5/Refresh the desktop or destination folder to make it appear. Same thing for when I am deleting files, they don't actually disappear until I F5/Refresh the folder/location they're in.

So far I've done a sfc /scannow, a chkdsk /f /r and also tried rebuilding the iconcache on botto see if either would fix the issue but no luck so I figured I'd hit up the genius TPU community for some assistance on trying to pin this one down.

Cheers!!

Is this problem only with network shares? What if you copy from one folder to another on your own local drives?

What happens if you don't refresh and just patiently wait? Does the file/folder list eventually refresh on its own?

If the shared folder is pinned to your Quick access list, try unpinning it and see what happens.

Oh, for future reference, when using chkdsk, if you use the /r switch, you don't need the /f switch because those functions are "implied" or already included with /r. You can see this if you enter chkdsk /? which lists all the switches and what they do. It does not hurt to include the /f - just note it is ignored when using /r. That is, it is not going to perform the /f functions twice.

To answer your questions:

1) It's not just network shares, it's any location. So if I copy a file from "Documents" on my device(s) to the desktop or vice versa, same result.

2) If I don't manually refresh the destination folder, nothing appears. I have waited but it never refreshes it itself.

3) No pinned quick access stuff.

I have observed this behavior for a long time ... going back to W4WGs, tho it has never been consistent ... a sometimes it does / sometimes it doesn't thing. For example:

Networked drives on the Desktop are Q (CAD Files) / R (Data) / S (Graphics) / T (Personal) which doubles as a CAD Workstation and Daya Storage for a SO side of a SOHO network. This box has no email. So im going thru my e-mails and I look for a PDF of a site plan for a new Medical Center. I see the CAD file, but no PDF cop. Rotate chair 90 degrees to the left and I open the CAD file from Windows Explorer and have AutoCAD file create an "AutoCAD PDF". So at this point, I can see the same folder on the desktop as the laptop.

On the desktop, I immediately see the PDF immediately appears
On the laptop, it's not there .... and perhaps this explains what you are seeing.

On the laptop, the command to list the files and folders was made before the file was made. and I assume it's willing to sit like that until it receives and instruction to relist. So to resolve I basially go "up" one level in the folder structure abd then back

Say from Q:\Drawings\Client No 396\JobNo08\Site Plans to Q:\Drawings\Client No 396\JobNo08\ and back again to Q:\Drawings\Client No 396\JobNo08\Site Plans and its there. Then again, sometimes it does immediately appear in both ... I have never been able to figure out why.

@Devastator0 - When you ran system file check (sfc /scannow) did it find any errors it could not fix?

If it makes you feel any better, you are not alone. While not widespread, this problem has plagued many users going back years. This technet thread was started in 2010 and is Part 2 because Part 1 was getting too big!

The problem is, it cannot be duplicated on demand and it does not happen all the time. Intermittent problems are the worse.

This Computer World article provides "some" possible solutions that worked for "some" people "some" of the time.
