Weird goings on when I try to copy and paste anything.

Out of nowhere, it would appear that I can't copy and paste without some HD/SSD address(?) garble being pasted instead. For example, I try to copy an email address from a website, go to paste it into my Gmail address line and it spits out this instead:

C:\Users\THOMAS~1\AppData\Local\Temp\PRODUCT_NAME_UNKNOWN_CrashDumpPRODUCT_VERSION_MAJOR_UNKNOWN-PRODUCT_VERSION_MINOR_UNKNOWN-2018-11-01--13-03-14_.dmp.

It will do it for random text as well, regardless of whether it is an email or pasting into a web browser etc.

Secondly, it would appear I cannot 'cut' and paste, a jpeg for instance, from one folder to another folder on my SSD, however, I can 'copy' and paste.

What is going on?

Tom.

only time i had issues like that it was malware related - i was getting jibberish code, as the malicious software was trying to use the copy-paste mechanism for data sniffing

its either a faulty program, or its malicious - so first off try malwarebytes and see how that goes

Also,
1) It's now taking about 30secs for Firefox to show. I will get a blank, white screen as soon as I click the icon but it will take about 20-30secs for any graphics to appear. (I re-installed FF an hour ago, no difference)
2) Lots of random blue circle loading/thinking action next to the cursor for no apparent reason - never had this before yesterday when it all started.

I've just done a scan with Avast, Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware and Spyware Terminator. The only program that came up with anything, 'adware tracking cookie', was SuperAntiSpyware.

I've still got the copy and paste problem.

Elevated command prompt sfc/scannow

also, CCleaner has a "clear clipboard" option as well i think

check in notepad to be sure the issue isnt Firefox specific.

Sticking key(s) on keyboard or micro-switches in mouse ???

also check here in settings (enter "clipboard" into search bar)

Dorsetknob,
I think my keyboard and mouse are ok.

Jboydgolfer,
I do not have a 'clipboard' option in my settings. Also, just using settings is iffy, non responsive, works but as you go further it stops, etc etc. I have to hit the cancel 'X' button to kill it and go back in.

My advice: pull your data drives out, reformat your OS drive and reinstall the OS from scratch on a clean drive, then reconnect your data drives and do a thorough check for malware.

Its almost 100% certain you've been infected and I would no longer rely on software to remove it. Those system hangs and long wait times are a clear sign something is 'digging in'.

When you're back up and running and the problem is fixed, I would advise you to change passwords for all your important accounts as well.

Everything you say here just screams out malware to me.

What operating system are you on ?and if you're having trouble navigating settings you might have an infection, or hardware/software related performance issue.

first if it were me, id remove all un used programs, get rid of security other than Malwarebytes, and windows defender, also, run windows defender "offline mode". it will run a scan with the Operating system offline, and will hopefully find whatever is going on.

ive never heard of ,or have no faith in these apps, so id lose them if it were me.
"Avast,SuperAntiSpyware ,Spyware Terminator"

malwarebytes adwcleaner direct download link

you could even try running the Malicious software removal tool built into windows , assuming your running windows.

Another step I'll take when removing viruses and malware from a system is to run it in safe mode then run the removal/scanning software with admin privileges.

Your browser was infected.

Get spyware blaster, get updates for it, implement all browser protections.
Get Spybot Search and Destroy too.

Start Firefox in safemode too.

Boot system into safemode and see if you still have same problem.

Jboydgolfer,
Windows 10 Home.

I've just done a Windows Defender scan offline and nothing seemed to happen. The scan screen came up did it's thing, I went away for a few minutes, it restarted in my absence and loaded my desktop. Shouldn't I get some sort of results, even if negative?

I am pretty sure if you start up windows defender ,if it found anything it would be in your results log. (you must be logged in as admin for it to run btw), it can be run thru powershell with the command "Start-MpWDOScan" if you think it didnt run, but if your sure you saw it run, im sure it did, it is the same as running it thru the defender app.

Also if you're on windows 10, you have a clipboard settings menu. Have you not updated this operating system in a long time or something? It should be there. Right click taskbar, select settings, in search box type "clipboard".

it's also possible if you haven't updated your operating system you could be vulnerable in that respect, so make sure you've done all updates.

go to my previous post and download malwarebites adware remover as well ,let that run and see if it finds anything up.

also when you run Malwarebytes security scan I recommend you do it as follows . Select custom scan, choose all drives & folders , leave nothing unchecked, & also be sure rootkit detection/scanning is enabled. It's not enabled by default, so be sure to enable it.

There's also a tool made by Malwarebytes called Malwarebytes antirootkit, or "MBAR" , You can find it on their website, you could also run that .

If none of the above options find anything wrong then it's likely a fault either software or hardware related

Tried a system restore before the time this issue started?

Ok, it is now fixed.
I did try a 'repair install' but it made no difference so, as Vayra86 suggested, I wiped the drive and re-installed and hey presto, as you'd probably expect, my computer is now working properly.

Thanks for the advice.

Tom.

I know you have solved your problem but I think if you have installed Avast then do the boot-time scan, it will find that hidden rootkit or whatever it was. The boot-time scan suppose to scan your computer before Windows starts, so that malicious thing can't hide from the scan.

In that sense, any security software that can do boottime scan, could have fixed your problem. Jboydgolfer solution about the
Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit seems plausible too.
