Weird Graphics Problem in GTA:IV

Just a ??? What is the Temp on Your GPU & CPU with the game runnin
:nutkick:

The reason why I am asking is my video card (XFX GeForce GTX 285 1GB 512-bit GDDR3) fan speed is set @ 40% & doesn't increase even with increased temps. I reset my Fan speed 70% when playin games and I have no problems (except 4 a loud fan noise) with my graphics (my temps don't go over 71c). Now sometimes I forget to change my fan speed & I get graphical errors like that (the highest I seen my GPU Temp without increased fan speed was 82c).

Max GPU load in GTA:IV is 60c

CPU is also about 60-65c

(:

Temp is not your problem then!!!
:nutkick:

I did some lookin & on several web sites it says your max temp for you CPU is 60c. Now I think that it is 65c or 70c from what I remember about the core 2 duo's
:nutkick:

one of the things I would try is put your CPU back to 2.4GHz & see if that helps with the graphical errors!!! Hope this works.

I've tried that already, didn't work :P

But with vSync enabled and 2XAA in nVIDIA control panel, the graphics are fixed...

So it's not a hardware problem, it's just a problem with the game :P

cool sounds like rockstar needs 2 have an update patch. Good Luck!!!
:nutkick:

Seems to make it slower

If you are talking about Frame Per Second wise, yes vsync will do that. It forces the FPS to be a multiple of your monitors refresh rate, so if you can't get 60 FPS, then it will drop down to 30 FPS, which will probaby be noticeable if you were getting 50 FPS.

GTA IV is a pretty CPU intensive game. Try knocking back your sliders some, or buy a quad.

Yea, GTA:IV bench
And Bjorn_Of_Iceland, I'm only on 1280x1024 with all textures and shadows high, but anisotropic on 8x and the draw distance and detail distance etc are on about 50%, so it's not exactly maxed out... so I don't see why it would need 100% GPU usage

Means its bottlenecked by the proc. GPU has more headroom for improvement from proc speed (in this case, cores). Chart shows it

Well I spoke too soon, even with VSync enabled and AA on in NV control panel, the problem is still there...

Any more suggestions?

Meh.. maybe the game just isn't liking your overall setup of your rig :/

I haven't a clue what it could be, maybe reinstall the game and hope for the best if not done so already.

GTA IV IS BAD! delete it!!!!!!

There's a lot of tearing in the pavement and walls etc, I guess it's only REALLY noticable during actual gameplay rather than screenshots, but all those light spots aren't supposed to be there...

I personally thought that was rain just looking almost real cuz its on computer and maybe some phyx, it is odd though.

most worthless post evar.

I love GTA, yes it requires alot of power to run well, but even basic machines cna run it with low settings and resolution. It actually has "gameplay" I know alot of you don't know what that is due to the time you spend jerking it to visuals.

Have you tried.

Different drivers
Underclocking the GPU and VMEM
Turning off all Nvidia control panel settings
Changing resolutions

Thanks.

On-Topic : Given what you have already tried, I would take a stab at Steevo's ideas.
Especially trying the underclocking. Your GPU may be flakey even at stock clocks.

Hmmm thanks guys, but it seems to have randomly fixed itself again...

Urgh, this game is so not worth my time! But I do really like playing it :(

I guess when it happens again I'll look a lot deeper into it (:

And somehow while playing GTA:IV for about 10-15 minutes my GPU only went to 46c max, ha...

I would definitely try this. I would also try installing the latest beta 260 drivers and checking the clean install option to reset all the nVidia control panel options. Of course we could also just be chasing a bug in the game itself...

As for GTA:IV, it is a very fun game. I agree it takes a lot of horsepower to run it with high settings. However, when it first came out, I was able to play it comfortably on an Athlon X2 4400+(939) and HD4670 and it still looked better than it did on the consoles. And that was version 1.0, before the patches that fixed a lot of the performance problems. GTA:IV just got a bad rap because the max settings were actually the max setting the engine could handle, and not some watered down artifical max settings that most games use just so they can make people with high end hardware happy they can max the game out at 150FPS...

I agree. this is a game that will challenge hardware for some time to come!

I didnt read the whole thread but i had simular problems on my I7 920 and 5850 but what fixed it was the latest GTA patch (i think its 1.07)

I love the GTA IV series, especially lost and damned... tho the GFX options need playing with to get the best look/performance.

IMO worst thing about the game is Games for Windows Live.

As far as gfx/performance - game is not entirely GFX bound, it is very VERY sensitive to system memory latencies and CPU power in my experience, and it does not love most socket 775 systems :/ sorry to say.

Your glitch just looks like the game messing up reflection...

Yea I already tried those drivers a while back to try and fix it but it made no difference :(

I get an error when I try to install 1.07, but the glitch first occurred the first time I installed 1.07 so obviously that won't fix it :P

Yea my memory is pretty cheap... :P Not very good :D

I can live without playing this game, it's just that it'd be nice to play it cos GTA is so fun when you're just bored and need to mess around. No other games really offer that kind of dynamic fun :(

Maybe it's just that I'm on XP now I guess, seems like things are moving on from XP these days :/

EDIT: +1 GTA is a seriously fun game to play on when you just want to waste time and shoot the c*nt's in the house next door :p
