I'm playing Deliver Us Mars.

I've just landed on the red planet, but the game already feels like a cheap knockoff of Deliver Us The Moon. 4 astronauts are sent on a mission, 3 of them are women, and the language they use... oh man! It's so cringy! Almost like Star Trek: Discovery, which (being a huge fan of Star Trek) I couldn't watch any more after just two episodes. There's barely any respect anywhere, just unexplained, undirected teenage angst. :fear:

I can't even sympathise with the main character because she's so nosy! Your main character in DUTM had a mission, a duty, his identity was covered in dust while you were discovering pieces of the past and put the puzzle together in your head by the end of the game. He was an adult. The main character in DUM is not. She's a little girl with daddy issues. Here, every motive is self-explanatory, and there's no mystery, nothing to discover. You have a mission, that's it. Even the main character's personal goals are shoved in your face right from the start, which takes away from the experience that made DUTM great.

Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is fun, the mechanics, graphics and performance are more refined than in DUTM, and the base story isn't bad, but while DUTM's magic was its frugality with dialogues and the emphasis on puzzles and discovery of your own, characters in this one just don't seem to shut up and let me breathe for one second, and every story piece is right in your face! It's sooo annoying! Ugh! :(

Even the liftoff scene feels weird. DUTM had this abandoned space base as starting location, which added a bit of eeriness and urgency to the game. Here, it's a big city with lots of poor people showing their dissatisfaction with the space mission because they're poor and can't understand why humanity's spending money on such stuff. Why? Just plain WHY!!!??? It's supposed to be a space exploration / puzzle game. FFS! :banghead:

And the scene when the main character's sister dies... It could have been a very emotional one, but because there's not much previous connection between the two, and there's more crying and shouting and staring at each other and hitting glass panels trying to break free and more crying and shouting, it completely destroys the immersion. It feels cheap and forced, and more like a temper tantrum than an expression of real emotion. As a comparison, there was no crying and hitting glass at the end of DUTM when you found your old friend frozen in stasis and you died, and it was VERY emotional! Less is more, dear developers. Less is more.

Verdict: While DUTM was a masterpiece in my opinion, DUM tries to add to it with lots of unnecessary dialogue, boring, pointless flashbacks and that nobody in their right mind cares about.

Deliver Us The Moon: 9/10. Deliver Us Mars: 6/10. Damn shame. :(

I see this is free on EGS starting the 24th.

I also see [pasting+bolding mine] your unblemished thoughts on this game were disrupted. Without incurring further moderation, could you suggest how fully the removed elements would impair decisions to pick up this game at any price.

DUTM sounds great and will check it out!

I replayed DUTM three times, but one was enough of this one. Shame, because the base idea is good. If you can get it for a few quid on a discount, do it, it's worth one playthrough - but that's it. Good concept tarnished by badly written dialogues, emotional overload, unexplained teenage angst.. Damn shame, really. :(

Picking up the game for free is a must! :)

Although, I would still play Deliver Us the Moon first, if for nothing else, then for the story that may seem murky if you jump into DUM first.

Deliver Us The Moon is like the original Star Wars trilogy. Deliver Us Mars is like whatever Disney pushes out these days under the "Star Wars" banner. It's not awful, but... I'll say no more (to avoid further moderation).

Robocop Rogue City is surprisingly okay. Pairs perfectly with beers! It's very dumb and simplistic both as a shooter and a detective game, but jokes are fun and robocop vibes are there. I don't know, judging by reviews some people are treating the "choices" in this game seriously but I can't bring myself to, it's just too fun to issue fines and tickets to all sorts of street punks, hobos and delinquents - and robo always has a one-liner to say! :D

In between my continued Starfield sessions, I've now been playing Ghostrunner II and RoboCop Rogue City. Ghostrunner II continues to be every bit the hardcore, constantly on the move challenge as the first was, if not more so. RoboCop RC is also every bit as good as Teyon's last game, Terminator Resistance. These guys are the new kings of games made from movies.

Regarding Starfield, I have found a way to maximize the speed and efficiency of getting through non Starborn alliance NG+ runs (the only way to keep leveling all powers), while minimizing the cost of shipbuilding. The trick is going B Class with a high power, but power efficient reactor, and the power efficient VOA guns combined with PBO-175 AHB (1222 combined DPS!).

This also means the only quests required to do so are Grunt Work (unlocks VOA), and Mantis (unlocks Razorleaf), as it costs only 216,666 to build this ship, which I call the Razorbeast.

Finished Half-Life Uplink on the new HL update, which took just a few minutes. Then I got embraced by the HL universe and jumped into HL2 Ep2 and remembered how much I disliked those creepy tunnels with worms and spiders.
This fellow felt the same, but sadly didn't make it.

Rescued an 8 year old girl in Rimworld, had a dance party, and everyone called her a finch, which apparently is an insult.
I love rimworld interactions.

"Frenchy attempted to woo Ram by talking about cabbages. Ram responded well and is now Frenchy's lover."

That one actually happened...

I'd rather say... play it and try to discard the "commentary" in your head while doing so. :)

Also: play Deliver Us The Moon first!

I owe @Calenhad a word of thanks - here in a topically relevant place - for making me dig around in the right places of Nvidia app control panel. Specifically regarding setting up specific programs with V-Sync and max fps. Across the four games I actively play the newest also has a resolution scaling option that added yet further improvements.

FH5 ate up most of my playing time today before moving on to COTW. All the performance I'd chalked up as lost to updates returned in both.

The AC Mirage patch notes from Nov 7 states they added an option to disable chromatic aberration, so I'm going to start playing that now

Are you going to try this on the Deck OLED with a frame cap? or desktop game for you? keep in mind if you do frame cap on SteamOS it auto adjusts the refresh range so no tearing and stuttering, the game reads the monitor its on as running at whatever fps you tell it is. unlike windows, which i think is pretty genius. SteamOS is the only saving grace for Valve for me at this point.

Immortals of Aveum is one of the official FSR3 Frame Gen games. you don't need preview drivers for it. well there is a demo of it now on steam so if you own a AMD card you can try out FSR3 Frame Gen for yourself, I am testing it out right now on my 7900 xt. honestly, its not bad. improves image quality and gives me a 60 fps. no issues so far, but i still hate this is the way the industry is going, meh. no big deal i guess, i can't really tell the difference, it still feels smooth like regular high refresh.

i do hope more games get it and its get more polish. cause im not about to buy a 1-2 grand nvidia super fuck boi card. my $600 7900 XT can flex just fine still.

edit: i just finished the Immortals of Aveum demo, honestly that was fucking awesome. def going to buy this when its hits the 20 dollar bin

So I am playing Rimworld some more (thanks...)

Found a nice little SP racing game.

New Star GP

I have never understood racing games, outside of drifting to gain an edge, and timing your braking right, it just feels like I am going in circles a lot of times. I don't mind arcade racers, like Distance for example gives me a boost feature and flying feature (yeah a bit out there I know) but it makes it more fun because I have more options.

What about racing games do you like and is there something I am missing?

This is arcadey, and you can't just plant the throttle, there is some skill to it. Normally i don't play racing games at all, but this is not bad.

If you haven't yet, you could try emulating Ridge Racer 7 from PS3. Or Ridge Racer 2 from PSP. Not sure if the copies are easily available! Anyway, those are purely about drifting as fast as possible in a most unrealistic way - and very fun.
For me, personally, most modern arcade racing games are a snoozefest, especially stuff like Forza Horizon or The Crew. Burnout 3 or Ridge Racer though? Now we're talking!
