I play at 4k so upgrading cpu to me doesn't make a big difference as the GPU bottlenecks it.

It's neat that by now one can sort of tell when Zen actually took off, that many early Zen adopters quickly bet on Zen 3 after Zen 1, what was the upgrade path of people with Intel chips prior to Kaby Lake (Kaby, Zen 3 or Adler), and that those that were on Kaby or Coffee Lake are jumping to newer Intel chips.

On Intel 7th Gen (Kaby Lake) and would be on a Zen 3 if not for the pandemic. Instead it's likely that I'll be moving to a Zen 4 X3D or Raptor Lake sometime next year depending on what price/perf looks like around Q2.

Interesting results. I did not expect Zen 3 to be that popular.

I am waiting for Zen 4 X3D before I choose my next upgrade. That could be my first AMD CPU since 2011 (Phenom X6, which was not great).

I was one of those weirdos who bought Zen 1 in 2018 and used it till 2022 and then switched to Alder Lake in early 2022 cause reasons.
AMD had nothing to offer in my budget range and at the time my B350 mobo had no official support for the 5000 serie CPUs 'non X 5600 also did not exist yet' and even the second hand R5 3600 prices were too high for my taste so I just sold the entire platform and made the switch with a B660 and a 12100F.

I needed the single thread IPC upgrade for some of the games I play, my 1600x wasn't exactly doing great in that regard.
Sure if I knew that my mobo will get the support and that a non X cheaper 5600 is coming at a later point maybe I would just go for that and stay with AMD but well its history now, can't say that I regret it either. 'This platform will last me a long time since I have no need for anything faster than a i3-locked i5 anyway.'

Moved from Intel, and for the same reasons, I am going to move from nVidia in the future. I was tired of being milked top dollar for small gains while they treat their customers like dirt. But I suppose when you are no longer a customer and a "consumer" you don't have to take them into account, eh nGreedia, eh Intel?

In any case, the AMD 5900X made complete sense to upgrade to, lovely bunch of cores for my multitasking needs as well as very good gaming performance. This machine hasn't given me any trouble but for one, and that is... my RTX3070Ti, it's the lame-ass 8GB VRAM buffer, it should have had 12GB minimum, preferably 16GB, I keep running out when I mod.

Just upgraded from an obsolete i3 3210 on my previous desktop to a humble r9 7900x.
I do think that zen4 helped zen3 post better sales as zen4 platform cost is pretty high and zen3 got cheaper post zen4 launch.

Move from 3600 to 5600, difference so stark compared 1600 to 3600. I'm willing to upgrade sometimes in next year to 7700X3D, if motherboard price come down to sane level.

but also have a 7th Gen 7700K: Work use

+ older stuff. I do have a couple of Zen 3/AM4 applicable half build throw-aways which were left with me and currently resting in storage... for the gaming upgrade, there's a strong possibility i 'might' be grabbing a 5800X3D to put one of these to use.

My full system is listed in forum drop down, but running slightly OC'd 6900K.

I'm still wishing for a consumer level HEDT platform again, but I'm not holding my breath. I'd like to have a decent amount of PCIe lanes with modern CPU performance without spending thousands of dollars.

Even though this is a forum for enthusiasts it's interesting to see that many "Intel 8th gen or older" votes. Looks like not everybody is after the newest stuff, I presume amongst simple average pc users this ratio is even higher, a remnant of the pre-Ryzen era with a lot of 4core CPUs. I still run a 2500K@4.4 GHz :D and it's enough for 99% of my daily stuff, I'm waiting for Arrow Lake or Zen 6 :D
