This isn't meant to be anything serious. More of a conversation starter and perhaps eye opener. Maybe next year I will do a similar poll and add a few suggestions.
I always enjoy adding a little humor to polls like an option "What is a desktop PC?" rather than having an option that says "Other".

Are you wasting your desktop PC's potential?

Given how the heaviest thing I do is games that barely make the GPU ramp up I'm going to say yes. But also no, because I sometimes do 3D-printing stuff and GM over Zoom, stuff that sucks on the laptop.

Nope.

I always buy stuff with purpose. But working with a PC can easily be something else than developing.

If most of what you do is gammin, then YES, you are wasting a valuable resource (as well as alot of your brain power), which can do soooo much more :D

@Easy Rhino - Gee whiz, Dude!

You are one the more prolific posters and valued contributor on this site, obviously spending a significant amount of time everyday (on average) here at TPU - perhaps volunteering more of your free time at other support forums too.

Then you post a survey in this tech support forum, asking what users use their PC for and don't even list "Participating in Forums" as one of the options!?!?  !

Please do NOT suggest "working the forums", that is, volunteering one's free time to help posters with their technical issues/questions falls under social media. It does not. That would be like saying flipping burgers at McDonald's is a social event because you deal with customers.

@Solaris17 (3.80/day), @Caring1 (3.78/day), @AusWolf (5.18/day!!!), @Dr. Dro (3.95/day) and others clearly spend a significant part of their computing time performing forum related tasks.

Even myself, I probably spend an average of 3 hours of my computing time reading posts and researching answers then writing replies everyday and my average here is just 1.83.

My computer runs my life. My calendar keeps track of my appointments, reminds me of upcoming birthdays and anniversaries. It tells me when to pay my bills, how much I owe, then my computer lets me pay them. It keeps track of all my contacts (friends, family, businesses, health, insurance, and more). I have over 600 music CDs, 600+ LPs, 300+ DVD and Blu-ray movies, a decent coin collection and more I keep in spreadsheets for inventories (for me and for insurance purposes).

Obviously, you could not include every category in your survey, but clearly there are some better options much more deserving of being listed.

Millions of people still work from home. So "Work" is an obvious option. And millions of people use their computers for "School" too. You didn't even put "Other" in your survey. :(

I use my computer 5 - 6 hours every day for, in order:
1. "Working" the forums,
2. "Essential" personal and head of household duties,
3. "Discretionary" personal stuff such as personal emails, listening to music (while doing 1 and 2), and keeping Amazon in business.

Of course! We all are! Frankly, at least for those who might be reading this here at TPU, most of our computers are more than we really need. Technically, unless our computer resources are maxed at 100% utilization, 24/7/365 folding/searching for a cure for cancer, ET, or some other "productive" activity, its maximum potential is going to waste. Even most gaming activities leave many computing resources idle much of the time.

We humans are odd creatures. Who needs a 80 inch TV in their living room? A big V8 engine in their family car?

I actually post a lot from my iPhone and on Thursdays for the past 6 months it's almost exclusively from my laptop (TPU isn't blocked in my university's network lol) but you do have a great point :p

Are you wasting your desktop PC's potential?
Nah, I'm on a six-core Ryzen 3600 with a RX 580

I'd say I'm lacking compute performance
Though it still performs satisfactorily so... I'm not really on a hurry to upgrade anything. Maybe the GPU at most.

Are you wasting your desktop PC's potential?
Contrary to many other answers to this admitting "yes", I'm going to say "no", and here's why. It's not because I disagree with the reasoning put forth by other answers (I agree with them), but I'd like to offer an alternative view based on how I see it.

The hardware needs of your PC are determined by the heaviest thing you do. It's that simple. It doesn't matter if 99% of what you do needs a fraction of that. If one particular thing you do (regularly enough) needs much more than the rest, then your "floor" becomes whatever your highest thing needs.

It's highly unlikely that everything you do on your PC will match the heaviest thing you do (unless that's practically the sole reason you use the PC). So almost nobody would be able to answer "no" if the basis for answering that way was "it's not at maximum utilization most of the time".

I would say you're only wasting your hardware if a particular part is well above what your most demanding task needs to the point that something much slower wouldn't lose you much end performance. And I don't think that applies to me. I've seen my CPU, RAM capacity, and GPU be my limiting factor at different times.

It could also be reasoned that if you're actually fully utilizing your PC a lot and/or simultaneously, then you're not just fully utilizing it but perhaps could use an upgrade.

As for the poll, sorry, but mine is too spread and I'm not sure I could pick three. I agree with the other post that the options seem a bit limited, but I understand you can't include everything.

All I ever use my desktop for is gaming. I always have a laptop for surfing, emails etc for probably the last 20 years or so. I like games at my desk and other activities on my couch. Right now I also have 2 laptops and a tablet.

Considering that I mostly don't even get to use my desktop most of the day while it crunches away with BOINC and Prime95 on anything with significant computing power - The iGPU, being sufficiently underpowered to be lost in the statistical noise of the dGPU and would probably only slow it down by hogging RAM bandwidth, excepted - I'd say no potential is being wasted. Good thing it only consumed ~300W while doing all that, too.

Utility, on the other hand... Does that count as "Performance Testing"? :p

The sometimes utterly inefficient, sometimes utterly unstable Excel and my lack of concentration is wasting my work PC's potential.

My home PC is designated mostly for gaming, so, as long as I'm playing some proper games (even though some of them have very basic requirements) I don't think it's a waste of potential.

Where's work/production? I mean, I guess you consider it photo or video editing, but that's a weird thing to lump with design, document production, or accounting.
My work/production was at least partially captured under programing lol.

Shouldn't the question include more than 1 PC in one's household \ business?
I have dedicated usage models for my PCs & don't exclusively do 3 activities on the 1 machine.
So I'm not sure how to answer this poll.

Gaming (obviously) from PC games to emulate old consoles, listening to music as I modded my X-Fi so it sounded great, and watching YouTube. Used to do overclocking and such but not much anymore, still loves to tweak though.

Are you wasting your desktop PC's potential?
Wow wow wow hang on now :D That wasn't in the topic's title!

But yeah, I'm wasting potential on the daily, I could crunch on something during idle. But its too much effort/cost for too little gain.

Primary use: gaming, after that web browsing, after that selling items (most notably TCG (Magic) cards).
I used to do music production on it. Now its mostly some light DJ'ing where the PC serves as the library and recording core through Pioneer's Rekordbox :)
