What does an "Older Intel Cpu" mean?

What does an "Older Intel Cpu" mean?

Does it mean a cpu that is unable to run any latest game?

Or does it mean a cpu that is from like 2008-2010 and is very much able to play any latest and most demanding game on 1920x1080 and optimal (med-high) settings smoothly @ 55-60fps when paired with a gpu like a gtx670/760/580.

I would consider anything pre sandybridge too old to be used in a any kind of gaming machine -exceptions apply depending on resolution and title
the faster later gen core2s are still serviceable for basic browsing and youtubez but they show their age relatively quickly when you put a real workload on them multitasking performance suffers greatly on the older dual core core2's
as for your statement about the latest and greatest demanding games
Nope not at 1080P tho I guess if you only play games like WOW or CS:GO a core2 and a GTX 670 would be more then enough,but as for running stuff like Darksouls 3 or ashes of the singularity

Yeah, I think of a old Intel. Usually comes to mind anything older than Sandybridge. Considering a Sandybridge still not a bad CPU. I kick myself for sale my 2500K off, but o well.

Unless of course you have X58, darn things I don't think are going die out yet.

I'd consider anything Core 2 and older "old." Core i# can still hold their own but yeah, depends on context. The first generation Core i# had relatively low clockspeeds (2.66 GHz for the i7 920) compared to the newer stuff (3.5+ GHz) which can make a pretty big difference in some applications.

Age. Modren Intel CPUs have much faster cache compared to older models, giving the newer models performance benefits even at lower clockspeeds. They also draw less power and put out less heat.

nope that thread is full of people running benchmarks and not real workloads,also they are all overclocked and pushing >150W TDP
sandbridge is the oldest I would go if you are looking at building a system from used parts

Depends entirely on what you're doing. For 90% of the every day tasks a later generation Core 2 with at least 4GB RAM and an SSD will be more than sufficent. If you mean gaming, as in playing todays AAA titles on close to full cream, then sure. If you're willing to turn down the details or you're mostly interested in light games, Nehalem and up would be something to look for, but most price efficient will likely be a Sandy i5.

Those Extremes kicks a whole lot of ass. You would need a Sandy Bridge i5, or a high end Nehalem CPU to compete with that. It depends on the workload obviously, anything more modern will spank it in single threaded stuff.
