What exactly are "Feature Updates"?

I'm a little confused. Are they to be considered akin to the service packs of yore, or are they almost a new OS in their own right? Is this like the upgrade from Windows Vista to 7, or more like 7 RTM to 7 SP1? Or are we talking more like Windows 98 to 98 SE and 8 to 8.1?

Are you talking about the updates to Windows 10 core? Feature Updates are a little more involved than that, as the last Feature Update that was released from Microsoft also changed the build # of the OS. It had a different Kernel version number than the previous Windows 10 build.

Yeah, I get that. Which is why I'm thinking they might be replacements for the old "new OS every x years" system Microsoft has used up until now. I just don't know if they should be considered service packs, or almost entirely new OSes.

By "Feature Updates", I'm referring to things like the newly released Creators Update, and the previous Anniversary Update.

Think of them like when W8 went to W8.1. It's a new OS install basically. Which is why, unlike SP of yore, you get a whole reinstall.

Be aware that MS themselves have stated that Windows 10 would be the "final" OS released by them. They're going to a system similar to what Apple has been using for a long time (Always "OSX" but different/upgraded core)
