Hi all,

So as the title says, what FTP Software (if any) do you use, and why do you like it (or tolerate it)? I had a search through the forums and couldn't find a similar thread. If I missed one, I apologize.

I'm currently using FileZilla for my work and home FTP needs. I like that it has XML import for sites (and its free :)), but I dislike its clunky interface - it sometimes has issues with mapped network drives etc.. I tried SmartFTP back in the day, and really liked it, but it is too expensive to buy.

Just interested to see if theres anything out there I havent seen thats good, or see if anyone knows of FileZilla forks or anything like that..

FileZilla
WinSCP
Cyber duck

WinSCP ftw...

Last one I used many many years ago was FlashFXP.

Still being made as well.

Man I remember FlashFXP, I used to use it like in the early 2000s, before trying SmartFTP and FileZilla. I had a mate back then that refused to share over LAN but ran an FTP server on his PC instead hahaha. Maybe I must give it a look again.

I use a plugin for Notepad++ called NppFTP. It works great and does everything I need. I was using FileZilla before it started packing spyware around 2009 or 2010. I tried FireFTP after that, and it was ok. Then I started using NppFTP with Notepad++. It works great and you can just drop other things like installers and stuff right on to your FTP site.

EDIT: I haven't used FileZilla in years and it may be different now.

Filezilla and WebDrive.

I like WebDrive because I can just mount the FTP site as a network drive. It's not free though, so I still use Filezilla a lot.

I'm with @W1zzard on this one, FlashFXP is by far the best FTP client out there. Can't be 20 years, at least not quite yet, as FlashFXP only launched in July 1998...

It supports Secure FTP (SSL/TLS), SFTP and obviously plain old FTP. You can connect to two sites at once and transfer files between FTP servers without having to download files to your local machine (if supported by the servers, as this is FXP where the program got its name from). It's been regularly updated for the past however many years since I started using it. It's not free, but $30 gets you a lifetime license for personal use.
It also supports transfer queues, transfer rules and transfer scheduling if you need something complex. The UI/UX is also quite good for what it is.

Just to give you an idea what the most recent version looks like.

Erm none, although ran a system with Cerberus when needed for many years now. Years ago i did use SmartFTP but that was a long ass time.

I dont use anything. I just open the directory I need on my nas and dump the file(s) in there.

I remember FlashFXP was awesome back in the day, I may just give it another try. I installed WinSCP on my work laptop before I left for the day and it looked decent, I think I'll give that a bash here at home too before I take the plunge and get FlashFXP.

@TheLostSwede it looks so good in that screenshot, thank you. Like the graph too.

Lol I need FTP for ... other things. I use it a lot at work for firewall firmware and other similar things stuff between us and contracted off site servers, and I use it at home for large file transfers from a hosted server. No drag and drop options there :)

Just getting tired of the FileZilla issues with mapped drives primarily, and of course the glory that is its obnoxious updater.

FlashFXP. Probably for more than 20 years
The $29.99 price tag has always stopped me from using this FTP Client... I'm to cheap... hehe

I use it like 20 times a day, and it's a lifetime license, so I bought it at some point.

Aww yea, Lifetime for that price is well worth it as much as you use it.

I'm giving FlashFXP a try, enjoying it so far, but I have one question for those that use it frequently - I cannot for the life of me find the setting to increase the active threads in the queue (I like 5 active). Any ideas on where this is if it can be done?

Edit: I was going through their forum looking to see why the software hasnt had an update since 2016, found the dude is/was arrested for pedophilia... I'm unsure how I feel about this....

Been using a built-in Total Commander FTP client along with SFTP plugin for many-many years.
On linux it's pretty much the same: Krusader w/ built-in FTP client, or MC if I run it headless.

That was THE tool for people cross transferring pirated movies and games.

I haven't used anything for a while, but it was a daily thing at my last job to use FileZilla since a lot of remote digital menus didn't have any actual software to allow remote desktop connection. So, lots of file transfers from ftp and use of AMT to reboot the NUCs.

Just to give you an idea what the most recent version looks like.

FlashFXP - that UI reminds me of one of the remote software I made a lot of use of as well for the file transfer side of things....UltraVNC, I think is the program I'm thinking of. But we used that one, windows remote desktop, logmein, teamviewer and radmin (which also has a similar UI for file transfers as FlashFXP).

The last update was April 2017. That said, updates used to be a lot more frequent, so maybe there's some truth to it, but I don't want to speculate. :(

As to your questions, not all FTP servers supports multiple threads, so that might be a server limitation.

There should still be an option in the client to set the number higher. The client then attempts to create more download threads, but if the server doesn't support it, the threads won't be used.

I use this. Probably equal free options now, but it's simple and I have a license.

The developer being a pedo is a disturbing development however...

Ditto. TC has powerful filter functions for my needs.
