What 'hidden gem' of a game did you enjoy the most, that you haven't played in a long time?

I tried putting it on an old machine with XP but the graphics looked horrible, just trash compared to MSFS2020.
I had more fun flying online shooting each other down, re-spawning and going back to the furball in my Corsair

As a kid 20 years ago, I though that Final Fantasy X-2 sucks. Now as an adult, I actually like it a lot. Had to buy a blackbox version for PS2 as well.

Still haven't got all the achievements from the HD release of the Steam version though as I still don't like all the minigames etc.
I think I mentioned this elsewhere, but Final Fantasy X-2 was the first game in the series I bought right on release, and it was also the last mainline title I bought since (re-releases or remasters notwithstanding).

Maybe VIII through X, which I was heavily playing (and highly loved) in the years before X-2 released, set my expectations too high or something. I came away with a lukewarm feeling. Not regret over the purchase, but a realization that I had jumped into the series as a certain key point and that it was likely radically changing away from that.

I didn't think it was terrible, even at the time, but I definitely expected/wanted something else. Revisiting it these days, I enjoy it a little bit more, but I'd still say it's a good game, but not a great mainline Final Fantasy game.

Hard to say which I like more, the NTSC-U or PAL covers. Both look good in their own way.

(still need to get a blackbox X, donated my platinum X & X-2 to my friend)

Originally I bought X-2 used from my friend after he had finished it, I sold my console games back in 2006 though and now recollecting.

Even on launch day day FF X-2 hit right for me, it was just so unusual and unexpected it really won me over.

FFx FFx2 were good games, story, gameplay, ost but I can’t stand tidus……

Unfortunately, I don't have either of those anymore. I do have the HD remaster bundle of both on Steam.

It's been so long that I forgot about the PAL and NTSC differences. Were all PAL games for the PlayStation 2 with a complete White background? I think it would good for some games, but I'd probably get bored of it if every game was like that. Maybe I'm too used to the all the pictures the NTSC games had.

Also, one of those things is like not the other.

*looks up SLES number*

Fear Effect! That was such a good game!

Don't get me wrong, when I got it, I played completely through it and even liked it, but... it was definitely way different from the titles before.

They previous ones felt more grand in scale and the story was often more serious and deep.

This one immediately starts with a j-pop concert where Yuna, Rikku, and a third newcomer is having some stage battle with one of the cheesiest, campiest villains and her two sidekicks for stealing their... battle classes (dress spheres)? I know the idea is that Yuna would have a chance to be someone she wanted to be now that she didn't have to be a summoner, but... her character change was such a culture shock at first. Along with the loss of the world map from X (which I gave it a pass for due to its story making sense with it, the whole pilgrimage and all), now we also lost summons!? I was not a fan of most of the music either. The one exception was ironically the title screen music, which was so good. You sit there and just... freeze because it's so good. Especially with the way X (and IX) opened, you think an epic follow-up is about to unfold after choosing new game, and then... we get that...

I wasn't familiar with the people involved in bringing the series to life at that point, but when I later learned more about it, it's clear to see that the touches of Hironubu Sakaguchi, Nobuo Uematsu, and a few others was gone around this time. This is also when Squaresoft and Enix merged, and the movie had failed. Times of change for sure.

That being said, if you treat as a "fun side experience", then it's actually really fun. We learn about what happened to Spira since the defeat of Sin, the battle system and job class was actually great (I dare say X or X-2 perfected turn based battles for me), and while the story was pretty silly, the experience and content (mostly side content) was fun.

I had no idea so many people couldn't tolerate Tidus. I had zero problems with him. He may have been no Zidane, but I think he was fantastic for what the story was.

Ace Combat 4. I haven't played it in ages even though I still have a PS/2. I think the Ace Combat series really caught on with that particular release.

A "hidden gem" it may or may not be, but Faster Than Light.

It is, by all mechanics breakdowns and technicalities, a badly designed and no longer maintained game. But it is incredibly addicting, and I cannot start it without losing at least 3 hours of my life.

Just One More Turn syndrome, but it is Just One More Try in this case. I may not have seen the rebel flagship, but that doesn't mean I won't be able to get him next time!

Any Mount&Blade players here? I've discovered this game in 2009, it was all potato graphics and DX8 but man it was fun.
After years it became quite good and complex medieval battle simulation game.
Now I keep playing M&B2 Bannerlord. It is relaxing to crush skulls of enemies after a long and hard day at work.

I've always been PC only...
Soldier Of Fortune
Far Cry
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit
Serious Sam and Number 1 ! STALKER (not really hidden gems I guess)

Split/Second: Velocity that thing was fire and still looks good for a game from 2010. (Also published by Disney, like what???)

What platforms are this game on? Can I get it on Steam? If so, can you provide link.

Might as well mention Golden Axe's older brother, Double Dragon. Though neither met the "hidden" criterion.

Is this the right one? It doesn't say Velocity, so not sure.

Probably just under different name. From Wikipedia and Steam, the release dates are the same for both at least.

edit: "As part of Disney Interactive's new offering on Steam in late 2014, Split/Second was included alongside other titles such as Epic Mickey 2 and Pure.", doesn't mention Velocity here either.

yes that is the correct one

I am confused by the wording here, so if I buy this

I will get Split/Second for free? Or am I just not reading that right? (I am still waking up for the day...)
I understood that the Mickey game was released alongside Split/Second. I've also had only one cup of coffee so far

Yeah, I deleted that post. I just wasn't thinking straight.

I added to my wishlist regardless, Split/Second looks decent.

Sega Gt 2002:love:

Warlords 3 DLR for the pc. Came out in the 90s I think. Awesome game.

It was already on my wishlist, thanks for the reminder!

also, this is one of my all time favorite hidden gems, i play it about once every two years or so. its short, only takes a couple hours to beat it, but for some reason i really like it

I picked up a copy of the first Mount & Blade during the beta phase and absolutely loved it. I got pretty good at commanding my army, flanking with horses keeping archers back to launch volleys of arrows and so on. Great fun. I haven't played the game in years.

I've been eyeing Bannerlord for a good long while, but with all my other games I don't know if I'd ever get around to playing it.
