What is Causing GPU usage to plummet mid game? (Fps drop)

Hey guys.

So lately I have been playing quite a bit of Elder Scrolls Online. I have had my settings at medium and have been pulling something like 30-40 fps in the world, a little higher in like caves of course. I kind of thought this was normal for a bit then thought no way.

So I checked my Nvidia control panel settings and PhysX was set to use only the CPU. So I was like "OH, that's why!". So I changed it to only use my video card.

As soon as I did this my frames in a cave went from something like 47 to well over 90. AWESOME! Not so fast...

I leave the cave and my frames plummet to around 20 (because while in the cave I switched to ultra high and was STILL getting over 90 fps) So I switch back to medium and I am still getting around 31 FPS in the open world.

What is really getting me though is that I have been monitoring the card and as I have posted this it shot up and I went from 30 fps to over 90 in the open world. I switched the graphics to ultra high and it dropped to around 19 fps BUT the card performance also just killed itself too.

Definitely. Like I said, I will go from 90 fps to about 19 on ultra. Even if I drop down to medium settings I only recover to about 30-40 fps or so.

I was at one point. But not by too much. I defaulted everything and that didn't fix much. So I closed the game, updated to the newest driver (which I know I wasn't far behind since Nvidia auto updates) and re launched the game. I am now getting 80 fps in a building on ultra high settings and the graph appears to be stable. No drops like I did have.

So was my OC profile just garbage?

maybe yes, maybe no. Sometimes after these things I clean out my PC, replug RAM sticks and GPU... but if it works now, just game on.

Yeah, seems like some settings in NV control panel were messed up. Make sure to set power setting to "max performance" for this game. I've had same issue in Arma as it's performance is very limited by the server and GPU was downclocking due to "low utilisation". Even when GPU wasn't fully utilised at lower clocks, i noticed nice FPS boost after setting power profile to "max performance".

Well. The assumption that I have come up with is that I can't really overclock this card much further. It's already overclocked since it is the Gigabyte Windforce model. What ends up happening is after overclocking even a little bit I will be playing ESO and the game just locks up. At least the graphics portion does. I end up staring at a frozen screen and I can still hear all sounds and even inputs. When setting the card to default, I don't have that issue.
