Asus M3A79-T deluxe running windows 7 x64, AMD Phenom II 940 (AM2+)

I have 4x1GB sticks installed, of Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066
Due to the limitation on AMD cpus - it runs at DDR2 800 instead

Used them for months, they work fine. BUT i recently ordered some
G-Skill , 4 GB but 2x2GB instead of 1GB sticks

My plan upon ordering was just to use them INSTEAD of the Dominator - to run 4GB at 1066 instead of 800

But now I am wondering whether 6GB at 800 would be better than 4 at 1066? Now that I have my new rig , this one is going to be my file-server/media center (big case, set behind the TV , is quiet)

I have a spare board an processor, that given time and a little effort, I will be turning that into the file Server , while leaving the above mentioned system as the media center.

So...
M3A79-T Deluxe + Phenom II 940 + ?
ASRock A780GXH + Athlon X2 4050e +?

?=
Media center using 6GB@ 800 or 4GB @ 1066
leaves 2GB @ 1066 or 4GB @ 800 for the file server

which needs more ram, which needs faster?

THANKS in advance!!

Size > Speed. Always.

Ok, lets start from the top. The 800 mhz limit only applies to older model AM2 chips. The Phenom II 940 is an AM2+ chip and will gladly run your RAM at 1066. The BIOS is not identifying this correctly and you will have to set in the BIOS manually to 1066. This way you get the capacity and speed.

Secondly, the File Server will need less RAM than a Media center PC. If it is just a file server, than 2 GB at 800 or 1066 will be more than enough. Hell, most NAS you buy only have like 1 GB.

4 GB is already more than you'll ever use so 6 is pointless, you wont see any noticeable difference either way really but i would go with 4 gb of the faster stuff.

thank you all very much, understood now :-D

@thelaughingman : thanks especially for that tidbit , that is good news!
