What is the best anti virus software to get?
I am getting a new Dell laptop. I am spending about $1,400 on it and want to make sure it last and remains fast. I want to get a good anti virus software for it but don't want it to slow my computer down, but I do want it to fully protect my laptop from viruses and hackers. I am willing to pay money for it so whatever the best anti virus there is is what I want. I will have windows 7 professional on it as well.

Very simple question with a very simple answer....

MSE.

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Its made by Microsoft and is free.

Also welcome aboard and please fill out your system specs. I hope you stay as this is a great site to learn from.

What is the best is very subjective as not one program is going to be 100% all of the time, but I agree with MM. No need to pay for protection.
I use MSE and it's great. Small footprint, small updates, no charge.
Your surfing habits will make more of a difference than your protection.

I also use MSE, although others include Avast and NOD32

As these guys stated a good mix is always good as no anti-virus is heaven sent. I use MSE for 24 hour protection and Malwarebytes for a once a week scan.

However no software will ever replace common sense. Use that more than anything.

I use Avira and love it.

I'm still on a paid copy of ESET NOD32, which has always been fast and uncluttered, but I'm with everyone else who says Microsoft's free one.

I mean, MS surely know the insides of their own OS the best, and want to make Windows go well.

I have been using AGV's free protection for a few years, not one problem.

Basically all the well known ones are well known for a reason, they are all good(except Norton and Mcafee, they are well known because they suck but they pay OEM manufacturers to include them with their computers.:D).

Anyway, the ones that are good in order of my preference:

MSCE
AVG
Avast
Avira

But really they are all great. Throw in a regular Malwarebytes' scan once a week and you should be golden.

There really is no point in paying for Anti-Virus as the free options are just as good at protecting you.

And to tell the truth, I've seen machines with pretty much every AV known to man come through my doors polluted to hell. An AV program can only do so much, security and smooth operation of a computer really comes down to the person behind the keyboard.

I user Norton Small Business at work. It does not suck, and it gives me features that make my life as a network administrator easier.
That being said, there is no reason to pay for protection for a single computer that is not part of a network domain.

I no longer use anything at all and have zero regrets. ;)

I have AVG and i like it! i haven't had any issues with viruses or malware

I've used a lot and would reccommened MSE as the best free option. But, if you want to pay, Norton Antivirus/Internet Security is my shield of choice right now. I've used 2010 and 2011 of the AV and 2011 of the IS, both I barely even know are there, which is a BIG thing I look for with an AV. Internet Security has it's own firewall, which is not as much of a pain as some I have tried. A breeze to configure to allow a program or network device as well.

There have been a couple threads started in regards to the OP's question. I would suggest reading through this one:
Best Virus Protection

The best one to get in my opinion would be ESET Smart Security which is by the same people who made NOD32. The different between this and NOD32 is that this is a Internet Security suite which consists of NOD32 (Anti-virus), Anti-Spyware (also included with NOD32 if you wanted that instead), Anti-Spam and a Personal Firewall.

Just to make it clear Smart Security is a security suite which detects most viruses, more than most too, and rarely gives false positives.

The firewall combined with anti-virus has protected my PC many times from when I've visited dodgy websites as well as USB viruses which got onto my USB when I had put it into a friend's computer who was unaware his computer was infected.

From what I've seen I would say that this Internet Security will protect your PC from hackers or at least most hackers, but there again it is rare for a normal person to be hacked by a hacker, unless of course you are a person holding some interesting information.

Just to add some extra information for other readers of this thread.

Comodo is one of the very few that offers free AV for server editions of Windows.

I find the mandatory registration process of Avast rather annoying. A "free" AV should be install and leave me alone and not install and bombarded me with emails, registration demands and upgrades every day. I dont like that.

Yes, but some of the others are very close, especially when you are talking about a fraction of a percentage point. Of course there are other considerations, (False Positives, Scan Speed, etc) but you really can't beat real world testing of several programs vs. the nasties.

I'm using Avast, and im liking it.

norton is good choice especially after they refresh their engine, nod is nice too but it has many option =) avg kinda good but sometimes it gives false alarm.. But anyway whatever antivirus u take just stay update
