Older, but awesome RTS games:
-Earth 2150 series (Lost Souls is extremely challenging) - Stands out because it is one of the few games where you can tunnel and customize units. It's also got three very unique factions to play and they are well balanced. Oh, and in the campaign, you can save units and money from one mission to the next in most cases.
-Empire Earth (really, really challenging)
-Ground Control II - Best story in an RTS I've seen and the gameplay mechanics are excellent too (very little structure building).
-World War III: Black Gold (same awesome engine as Earth 2150 and really challenging)
-Act of War: Direct Action and High Treason

edit: i forgot company of heroes! shame on me.

Starcraft 2 single player is very fun, but i got tired of its multiplayer playstyle ever since Dawn of War 1 and Company of Heroes came out.

Besides those 2 mentioned I like Supreme Commander 1 (not 2 sorry), Sins of a Solar Empire, Galactic Civilizations 2 (twilight of arnor expack is awesome. Also way better than Civ 5 for me.) , Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is good, but i guess im terrible at it.

Empire Total War and Civ 5 are good ones for me.
Company Of Heroes is great and so is Supreme Commander but try avoid Supreme Commander 2.

StarCraft 2 is a decent newish RTS.

Empire Earth had some sweet ideas, but I never really got into it. The Ground Control games are seriously underrated though. They are pretty darn good. -_-

If you like Company of Heroes, have a look at the Men of War series - incredible amount of control and some interesting game types.

Actually almost all of the Paradox Interactive games :p

You can try Cossacks II - Napoleonic Wars and Cossacks II - Battle for Europe as well, it's from the makers of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games (heck they started with Cossacks as their first major international game 5 years ago).

Agreed. They completely failed with EE III. EE II is okay but EE is best.

A good turn based strategy game is the open source project The Battle for Wesnoth. It's 2d, but for a reason I can't explain the graphics are very charming. Deep and challenging gameplay too.

I agree on the quality of EE 1 and the Total War series (never played Starcraft and Civilisation), but I thought it would be nice to suggest a game that is less known.

+1, it's suprisingly good, and it's downloadable for Win, OSX and a bunch of linux distros. Aside from the source code of course. :D

Oh man, Dune 2000 got me hooked on RTS. I bought Emperor: Battle for Dune as soon as it came out and I played the $h!t outta that game! Good times.

Since then, I've poured the rest of my RTS hours into the original Supreme Commander series (mainly Forged Alliance) as well as the sequel, Supreme Commander 2. I liked SupCom:FA a bit better than SupCom2 though. However, that's not to say SupCom2 is a bad game, I still play it almost every day and have lots of fun. It's just not as good as it could have been. I think they wanted to make it easier for people to play in hopes of getting more players (which makes sense from a business perspective).

Hehehe, yeah. I played it on a 900Mhz Pentium III with ATI Mobility M4 graphics all packed into a Dell Inspiron laptop, being displayed at 1024x768 on a 15" screen. It was just enough to play the game but not enough to really crank up the graphics too much. A lot of units would really bog it down. Definitely a great game for its time though. Had to be one of the very first fully 3D RTS games available anywhere, no?
