What would you install on it?

It sure can. I for one didn't know about the cumulative update you mentioned, thanks for pointing it out. Always good to have alternatives. Also, I'll look into that ESU patch.

Do let us know how it goes. I'm a bit surprised that your AGP card installed without an issue.

If it's meant for everyday use, I'd totally agree. Anything less might feel uncomfortable to work on. But old hardware can be fun to experiment with ;)
Hi,
Yeah let me know how it goes
I think I peeked at it once and blew it off thinking who cares it's ms eol updates vacation time finally lol

This little adventure had gone way down to the point that it would not even post. After leaving it to a few days I tried it again yesterday and managed to boot linux mint from a usb. After that tried to install windows 7 on it but it just would not accept my key. Tried some different keys from the internet but it di not help. It kept giving me error code 0x80072f8f. I tried a couple of fixes as suggested to change the time/date but it just wont accept the code. tried entering the key via taskbar. I decided to let it be since I have reached the end of my nerves. I might try it again next year. thanks for all your inputs.

Hi,
Most key errors are typos if valid keys
Too many entries will also lock the key until you use phone activation and maybe have to talk to ms support.
Sometimes it's easiest ot go to ebay buy a key that is warrantied to activate for 20.us :-)

Windows 7 is fine. It doesn't matter if you don't get the latest updates from Microsoft. Good antivirus software will solve the security problem.

At this point, might as well use WinXP instead of going through all this rigmarole. Or take it to a local computer repair shop & let them go through the trouble of trying to install Win7 so you don't have to.

After failing to install windows 7 I did try going back to XP (Last XP) to be precise. But it seemed to be very sluggish and slow for some reason.
After un-successfully trying to install windows 7, tried other alternatives like Xubuntu but it did not look nor feel great.

After I had a few days to cool off. I got back at it trying everything I could think of to install windows 7 but it would not recognize any of my USB sticks. Played around in the Bios and call it dumb luck but somehow it started to recognize my windows 7 DVD and eventually let me install it. After installing it tried to enter my Win 7 key but it just would not accept it. I got that key from my school when we had a sponsorship with the MSDNAA program so I know it's legit, but it just did not want to work. So I searched the internet high and low but no key I found was accepted. Luckily my sisters husband had some win 7 loader that patched it and made it genuine and he even gave me an older version of Firefox that seems to be working better than anything I tried installing on it.
I tried chrome before but:

Tried even a newer Firefox but it was a no go:
IMG_20201224_143806.jpg

As suggested by others I tried some less known browsers like pale moon but it did not want to work. In hindsight I maybe should have searched for an older version.
IMG_20201224_144003.jpg

I even tried a bunch of different browsers that were recommended like Seamonkey, K-Melon, Midori, Maxthon 5, Lunascape but none of them worked or even wanted to install in the first place.
So now I'm back to square one. Windows 7 is installed and activated. Firefox is working pretty good. The graphics driver is a bit older since I could not find the one I had previously installed.
If I could complain, it would be that windows wont update at all, but at least it's working and I can play the game I wanted.

If it was a vista machine id say install L4D on it.

It used to run on it, but just barely with everything on low

I just installed XP on a Athlon 64 and its runs Crysis just fine.
W2000 should work fine too

I tried W7, ran like crap very slow. Not to mention all the driver problems to work around

Can you try to use WinXP Integral Edition acquired from this website. This is what I use for all my systems as well as dual-booting Win10 for my desktop (also from this website). This is like a tweaked & sort-of-optimized version of WinXP updated with the latest possible updates & drivers for legacy & modern hardware. Also has WinXP optimized browser (I think it's a fork of Pale Moon/Basilisk) built-in. Dunno if it will run well on you system but give it a try.

Hello Devon,

I also installed Windows 7 on my old Athlon XP3000. And i learned very much about non-SSe2 CPU's and it took many hours.
1.) If you install KB4474419 your Windows can not boot anymore.
In this case you can go back to the last restore-point (start with install-CD->repair)
Microsoft says: Do not install on a CPU without SSe2.
At the end there are a few Updates, that fails . But only KB4474419 kills installation.
2.) You can use older Version of Firefox. I have installed V48.0.2 (Last Version without SSE2)
3.) I have installed Panda free Antivirus V20. This is the newest Version. For now, i did not found any other Antivirus than does not require SSE2.
4.) VLC V2.1.3 ist running without SSE2. newer versions do not want to install.
5.) If you CPU runs more than 1900MHz you will get problems with Radeon Driver. I use V10.2 on my ATI 9500 Pro. I had to patch it for not to use SSE2 code.
6.) I was not able to get Windows defender or Microsoft Security Essentials running. I think for this, the newest Updates (which can not be installed) are neccessary.

I hope, you have fun with my English.

Ild run linux ubuntu for the o.s. its so lightweight that it was runnable on the ps3. And even though its low powered it should run all the classic emulators like the nes, snes, genesis etc with no problem.

@Schera
I will try installing those updates as soon as I buy a usb stick so that I can make a backup just in case things go sideways. Probably next week.

I have now 3 games running (Athlon XP3000, Windows 7 32bit and ATI 9500 Pro)
GTA4 Vice City
Need for Speed 5 Porsche. 60-80 FPS at 1024*768
Test Drive Unlimited 15-20 FPS at 800*600

need for speed most wanted, league of legends, all old school emulated games, diablo 1 for sure, possibly diablo 2, can all be ran on that rig.

Thanks for sharing these detailed findings! You're right about Defender and MSE, they require the KB4474419 SHA-2 update. Your system still turned out faster than my Win7 64-bit min spec build
Care to throw some benchmarks at it?

Which Benchmarks ?
I have tried to get out best possible.
I wanted to see, if Office work is possible on this system.
I have installed a Sata Controller an a SSD.
Today i found something about an Omega Driver, which can change my ATI9500 to a 9700.
I will test this soon.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

This game was a PC gaming benchmark back in 2004

Hi,
AIDA is a joke of a benchmark only really good for memory latency and might not even be good for that.

Performance test 9 is best at least worth running for a whole system evaluation in one shot.

How are the speeds? Is it worth investing in a sata card.?
Onboard pata with sata konverter can reach up to 80 MB/s. My SIL3114 (PCI) does reach 90 MB/s. But it makes Installation of Windows more complex.

Omega Driver did a good Job. It gives nearly 2* FPS in TDU1 (up to 30 FPS). But they work only in WXP, not W7.

Now i have installed a ATI HD2600Pro. In WXP minimal better FPS as ATI9500 (Omega 9700). The CPU ist limiting.
In W7 I have now the same Performance like in XP.

CPUZ : 41

Panda Antivirus is not working any more. Not possible to get a 2020-Version or older. Support can not help to get older Version.
I found out that AVAST V10.4 from 2015 is working and is getting new definitions. Installation of 2016 Version is not possible.

3DMark2000 Default: Score 11642 (Athlon XP3000 FSB400 in W7)

CPU 668

Game 1 low: 182,2 FPS
Game 1 medium: 148,6 FPS
Game 1 high: 121,5 FPS

Game 2 low: 261,1 FPS
Game 2 medium: 132,2 FPS
Game 2 high: 85,1 FPS
