So, i have this dilemma.
The most demanding stuff i do, is play games at 1440p on an 144Hz monitor and use Handbrake to encode movies or Vegas to render simple clips. I have a 1070Ti, but i will upgrade to a RDNA2 or Ampere card when they come out.
I have to decide if i keep my Ryzen 2700X + B450 Tomahawk, or keep my i5 8600K that dose 5000Mhz with 1.33V or to sell both of them and get a B550 + Ryzen 4xxx in a few months ?

I would sell both of them, but with the current economic context allover the planet, the money i get today might be worth way less 2-4 or 6 months later.

As a stop gap measure i have an X58 Xeon to play my backlog of games. What would you do if you were in my shoes ?
Thanks.

Keep the 2700x and B450 mobo. Get a Ryzen 3000 series like a 3700x. Sell everything else for a better GPU would be my suggestion..

9600k is faster for gaming,2700x for video stuff.
depends what you wanna prioritize.2700x can game but for high refresh gaming, that's stretching it.
9600k can do video encoding and conversion, but not as fast as 2700x.

no contest in my eyes keep the 2700x but i do wear very thick glasses :) .

2700X can high refresh rate game, not as well as newer chips, but it will do it at some 10-15 FPS lower so what? Wouldn't even be noticeable when you're focused to the game.

Jesus Christ here comes the "15 fps is not noticeable" crowd.

I'm not saying 15 FPS is not noticeable, read it properly. Getting 130 FPS rather than 145 is not noticeable while you're focused to the actual gameplay itself.

the difference between 9600k at 5GHz would be higher than that.
all I'm saying is - let the OP decide what he sees or doesn't see, right ?

why is he keeping two ? one is a mediocre gamer, the other a mediocre productivity chip.get one that does both.

The 2700X is not a mediocre gaming CPU, and your source is just one test with no information given about anything other than the components used. Here:

%3 average with some very small FPS differences. He wants to keep both maybe because he wants 2 PCs so he can game when somebody comes to his place or something? You know, there's a usage for a second PC.

well he wants to sell so what does that tell you ?
it is mediocre,it's on par or slower than 7700k or 3300x.not exactly what I'd call exciting for 2020.
getting one cpu that is both a top gaming and a top productivity performer is a no brainer.

Keep both, buy next gen console. Ducks for cover!

well this is actually not a bad idea really.not bad at all money-wise.but going from 1440p 144hz to console.......yeah,no.

lol,it's in your chart

I think I have a better idea...maybe. Depends on how you want to do your upgrade.

That Tomahawk b450 board shut be one of the better ones out there.

So taken that into account. Intel cpu only has 6 cores but no Hyper threading. So it's not a perfect gaming cpu, as a perfect game cpu shut have 6 cores and 12 threads and less of a productivity cpu. So not my keeping for your doing.

Now for the amd setup. 2700x is a pretty decent productivity cpu, but less strong in games. So not perfect either.

So here is what I would do in your case. Swap 2700x in b450 and update bios. Then sell Intel cpu and board + 2700x. Get a Ryzen 3700X/3800X cpu as i think that would be the best mix between game and productive performance in that b450 board. For more performance you cut consider a Ryzen 9 3900X. That's 12 cores/24 threads of productive power while still being a very capable gaming cpu. Specielly if you pair it up with decent memory like 3200 CL14 or 3600 cl16 memory.

Are you still set on zen 3, it seems amd will after all support zen 3 on b450. So unless you want more or new features, I will keep that b450.

So in short 3700X/3800X/3900X or zen 3 and keep b450, unless you want more or new features on mother like pcie gen 4. Else I think this is the best mix between gaming and productive performance while keeping expenses down.

b550 and 4000 is still a better combo

no I said it in 9

By golly maybe this is what OP should do! I'm surprised it took 18 posts to get here.

Or he could do as I suggest, pair zen 3 with his B450 board unless he want more or new features B550 probably will provide.

Has x58 to Get by on, sell em ,get buy, buy 550 now while about and cheap and get 3800Xt, win.

Good point. I have X58 as well and it's not to shabby for it's age. Specially when overclock and if he have a 6 core xeon. That can still provide a desent gaming performance as long you can live with fps that is not so high. It can actually handle most new games pretty good.

It's up to OP to deside what he wants to do next. Keep b450 and Zen2/zen3 upgrade or sell it all and go B550 and zen 3.

If you have made up your mind yet, maybe you should stick with X58 and be done with it. Works better with Windows 7 if you haven't updated to Windows 10 yet.

Seriously, the Intel processor is probably faster in games and in some apps that were compiled by the Intel C++ compiler. However, AMD is more "consumer-friendly" than Intel. You don't need K SKU or high-end chipset to overclock. No new socket every year. You don't have to buy new motherboard for every tiny CPU upgrade. For me that's a winner.

Balanced market share = more competition, better prices and more perks for all of us
