What's the best processor I can buy for this motherboard?

MSI Pentium 4 845E MAX Mainboard.

My guess is a Prescott 3.6Ghz?

This mobo doesn't support the dual core 478 or does it? (There exist dual core 478?)

Thanks for the help (I'm planning to build a pc, got all the parts for free, I just need to buy a proc).

Pentium 4 (Northwood, FSB533, L2 Cache 512KB) is the best you can get sine that board is FSB 533mhz

the MSI website will have the most up to date listing. Theres a few (well, a lot) of different CPU types for socket 478, so dont make assumptions - MilkyWay says its a 533MHz board, but theres no guarantees every 533 will work.

assuming you ahve revision 1 (apparently there is 3 models) then your support is limited to older single core chips, without hyperthreading. Fastest MHz chip is a 533MHz FSB, 2.80GHz northwood.

the cpu list shows that the cpu i listed is the top cpu availabe for that mobo try to get the latest bios msi does that windows bios update but youll prolly need to flash it

EDIT: yeah thats the cpu i tried to list i mustve forgot to put the clock speed

remember a pentium 4 needs to be overclocked to get the most from it

yeah definately flash the BIOS before putting a new chip in it.
it may be harder and more expensive to find a working 478 chip, than getting an entirely new PC - check local PC markets and such, before looking at places like ebay.
