Which cpu for P5K-VM?

Greetings :)

Bought an Asus P5K-VM over a year ago but never even had it out of the box yet (personal issues distracted me)

Also got 2 gig DDR2-800 in a drawer awaiting a home.

Anyway, I thought maybe it was time I made some use of it and build a new cruncher rig.

What would be the best bang-per-buck cpu for it?
Plenty of overclocking potential would be nice.

I have a few retired cruncher rigs laying around that I can cannibalise for other parts so all I need is the cpu and perhaps a graphics card and power supply.

So basically best value cpu and GPU for a crunching/Folding rig based on the above board?

Grazi :)

P.S Budget is tight and my preference is for lower-end cpu's that scale well.

If you can get a quad, something like a used Q6600 would be good (you might even be able to OC it to 3.0ghz). Otherwise, if a quad is more than you can afford the E5200/E5300 is a great choice, and should get to speeds well in excess of 3ghz :toast:
Glad to see you stepping up the crunching effort! :toast:

EDIT: GPU-wise, a used 8800GS or GT should get 4K (GS) or 5K(GT) PPD OCed, and can be had for as little as $40-50.

Hi

Yes I forgot to add that I would prefer a quad
Stepping up?.....Not really. I have more "retired" rigs than running ones.....electric costs in the UK are silly and been out of work.

Got to the point where output/running costs became horrid.

Maybe I will give you a lil run for your money in your WCG team sometime ;)

iirc the 6600 is 65nm, the board is 45nm.
So I need a Yorkie.

Have to be an 8xxx or a 9550 methinks.

dam everything in the UK is silly prices! i kno what you mean about electric prices, they are just daft! We are taxed on everything. Apparently england is the most exspensive place to live in europe even tho we earn more money on average then most. good luck on the build tho. :)

As long as it's socket 775, you can put whatever processor you'd like to.
However recent quadcores based on the 45nm process are more energy efficient, but an old q6600 will do just fine. If you are going to fold on the gpu also, I advise you to go nvidia, as it has a huge advantage in terms of ppd against ATI. Even an old 9600gso or somthing like that(that can be had for little money) can destroy a 4850's ppd. Sad but true
Anyways, happy folding :toast:

Hmm...I don't think the G33's were that great at overclocking. If you go with a 45nm it would have to be something with a pretty high multiplier, as I doubt the G33 chipset would do much above 400 FSB, if even that.

Your best chance at a decent clock speed would be the Q6600, but they use more power than the 45nm quads, so it might cost you more in the long run.

The Q9550 would probably be your next best option.

The board ramps fine......got it off the back of decent feedback over at XS :)
Believe it or not there was a time I knew what I was doing.....it doesn't take long out of the loop to get waaay out of touch such is the speed of change.

Will see if I can source a decent s/h cpu from the psycho upgraders :D

Wouldn't touch a 65nm on a G33 P5K-VM, go with a 45nm part. If you want to be cheap, e6300 45nm or e7x00. I highly suggest looking into Q9550 as others have mentioned.

I just hope the board is better than the A7N8X I had in nforce 2 days.....POS

The highest FSB I have successfully gotten out of one of those boards is about 225-230 stable..
So look for that high multi.

Must edit title......It's P5K-VM not PK5-VM :o
