Which NVIDIA Ampere card would you buy?

I'm waiting for RDNA2, but i would like to replace my 3-4 years old but good-ish RX570 8GB card in the same price range as it was released in 2016 around 200-250 € and 8 GB is must for me in/for 2020+.

Don't know what options i'll have on the AMD side and how good their drivers will be, but i most definitely don't like the increased princing on both side and don't like that the AMD/RTG was too eager to follow NV's pricing, when specwise the 5700 was very similiar to the 580 but 100€ more expensive, so i'm not in that much of a hurry to buy anything from them as soon as possible..

I am not sure around 40% performance improvement makes it very similar to the 580?

He probably means the performance per dollar did not improve with Navi and actually regressed. Afterall anyone would expect a GPU that come out 2.5 years later would have better price/perf.

Anyone would expect the 3 year old GPU to be dirt cheap hence the better price/perf. In case you didn't know RX 580s and 570s have the best perf/price out of all GPUs by quite a margin, not just over Navi.

So ? the 1660Ti, 1660 and 2060 have better price/perf than 1060 6GB/1070, that's called progress.
People who actually care about price/perf buy Polaris and not Navi. Not those who advocate price/perf when it suit their discussion only .

For one thing, stop saying "price/perf", it's the other way around, "perf/price". If price/perf got better, well, I don't think we'd be buying anything period.

Secondly, 2070/2080/2080ti all have worse perf/dollar than 1070/1080/1080ti. Is that called progress as well ?

Well if people can afford 1200usd GPU do you think they care about perf/price in the first place ?
If you divide by pricing bracket then Turing is still an improvement on perf/price
2080 > 1080 Ti
2070 Super > 1080
1660 Ti > 1060 6GB
Now do the same for AMD and you see that 5700XT get beaten by Vega56, 5500/5600XT get beaten by RX570/580 in perf/price.
That is called regression.

Basically if you actually care about perf/price in the first place you will see that Navi is a regression.

In the 1200usd pricing bracket the 2080 Ti would still beat the Titan X Pascal, so there is that. I call that bracket "buyers who absolutely got to have the best GPU", so yeah perf/price can go somewhere else.

To better illustrate, here is the GPU sale figure from Mindfactory for H1 2020

People would just rather buy RX570/580 than 5500/5600XT.
5700XT is exempted somehow because it is the best AMD card you can buy, so for that I would rate 5700XT owners as people who "mildly" care about perf/price.

Sorry, but AMD it's not an option for me. No G-SYNC (my monitor only supports that), no RTRT, no DLSS....
3080 RTX would make a nice upgrade though.

People would just rather buy RX570/580 than 5500/5600XT.

RX570 8 GB 140-170 € and up,
RX580 8 GB 156-182 € and up
RX 5500 XT 8 GB 188-218 €.
GTX 1660 Super 6 GB 192-230€ and up.

The RX 5500 XT is in the same price range as the RX470/8GB RX480/4GB started and now it costs more than an RX580 8 GB, while true it is (slightly) faster, but not all the time and not in all games and GCN4 / Polaris is already a 4 years old tech. So for the same price i barely get higher performance than 4 years ago, there isn't much progress in this price range (on AMD's side). The 1660S is faster then the RX 5500 XT and roughly costs the same, it's simply a better alternative.

And for 70 € more there are the:
RX 5600 XT 6 GB, 263-300 € and up.
RTX 2060 6 GB, 262-300 € and up.

While they're a bit pricier, at least they are noticeably faster then the above mentioned cards, if i had to choose between them i would probably go again with the green team, though i had only Radeons since ATI 7500 till now (except GTX 460), i don't know what they're thinking/doing at RTG nowdays.

For now i'm waiting for RDNA2 and cheaper Ampere cards.

I read at videocardz that not all AIB cards will have the same Power Limit like the Asus TUF Gaming RTX 3080 will have a power limit of 350W while the Nvidia RTX 3080 FE will have a power limit for 370W.

Which according to the leaks means that the tester with the Asus TUF card only could OC the GPU to 70mhz and the memory to 850mhz.

Man, the power consumption on these things is atrocious, they're going to dump an unbearable amount of heat and I bet most models are also going to be unbearably loud as well. They have to, there is no going around it.

I am still fascinated how quickly people got over the fact that Nvidia just released a bunch of actual space heaters.

On the other hand, peaking at close to 500W all the time on the 12V rail for the entire system isn't exactly easy even for a quality 500-600W PSU. I never cared that much for power and to an extent even about heat, but when it forces you to buy a new high wattage PSU just to get the thing working it's staring to become really problematic.

Apparently some of the AIBs are adding these LED thingies to tell if the PSU is fine or not when the card is under load or something. That's both funny and worrying.

Just hope the successor of GTX 1650 comes in.
It doesn't need to be soon, since 1650 is fulfilling its niche nicely as of now. But within 3-4 years, the successor would be needed.

As powerful as at least 1660 class while no external power supply required, would be sufficient.

It'd be ideal if AMD APUs being able to perform on this level, that's too unrealistic, though.

Currently, my RX580 is running circles on 1500Mhz using a watercooling setup (AIO attached with tiewraps). The max consumption in a worst case scenario on Furmark is 300W or 22 Amps on the 12V line, lol. However i've always bin AMD since the 9600XT or so so it's pretty much assumed my next upgrade will be a Big navi around the 500 euro pricemark.

The RX580 holds really well at 1080p or in my case 2560x1080; no you cant run everything maxed out but for what i do it still pumps alot of frames.

Who knows if that is going to happen anytime soon(at all?). Ampere's power requirements are not conducive to mobile computing.

Things can change in the next 4-6 months, who knows. Yes, the power consumption is a big thing here, I agree.
