Why is computer hardware looking more like toys?

The MSI Big Bang and Gigabyte Sniper series boards are the epitome of s**tty/"bling" design.

I always thought the Ripjaws were the most gaudy of the gSkill lineup. At least those above are mostly black, low profile and you probably can't tell what ram it is once its plugged in. The Ripjaws will standout either way. That being said I've used gSkill many times before. I used to have OCZ gold ...now those were tacky! Good thing both brands had generous sales because their heat spreaders damn near made me not buy them.

Give me simple low profile ram.

Actually EVGa is one of the simplest hardware parts that keeps a normal or plain design on almost everything thye makes...

then x99 clasi

so still some brands that maintain a sober scheme,

also the same is for video cards,

then 980 superclocked

I've been an avid PC "enthusiast" for almost a decade and for the past couple of years I've noticed that hardware resembles cool toys more and more. These ridiculous designs on video card coolers, motherboards, and RAM sinks seem to be made for teenagers that like fire stickers and bright colors. I miss the days that everything keep the imposing enterprise looks instead like something serious. Now i dont know if I'm holding a video card or the latest edition of a super soaker. Is the demographic different nowadays?

Says he's been an enthusiast for "almost a decade," has a join date of march 2006... It's been a decade dude, you're likely over a decade now. lol

But yeah it really does depend on the hardware you were buying at the time and now.

And while Nvidia in the 6800 and 7800 series had mostly grown up designs, ATI not so much with the X800, X850, and X1800 series.

Gaming has always been pretty flashy so its parts tended to reflect that. Not that you couldn't pick something a bit more reserved.

I dunno but a decent, slick and minimalist case and internals are perfectly possible, you just gotta look for it a bit. And that is no different than having to look for fantastic color schemes to make a PC look like a toy car in disneyland really...

You can check my system specs for an all black/white/silver (cooling blocks) themed case and contents. And this is nothing out of the ordinary either. Only thorn in this theme's side is the blue heatsinks on the mobo, but they're push pinned so yeah ^^ (because it was never deliberate or anything, just max perf for minimum investment parts).

Btw my system may still contain the fiery dragon-MSI ferrari like TwinFrozr, but currently Im rocking a Gigabyte Windforce 780ti, which has an all black shroud, so there you go ^^

My whole desk is pure black too, black mouse, black mat, black keyboard, black monitor. No pointy bits, just function over form. Not a single unnecessarily uncanny design aspect anywhere to be seen, because just like yourself, I have never understood why I need a Transformer mouse, a keyboard that can light up like a christmas tree or a case that looks like a circus show.

EDIT: time to update specs, I just realized I did swap a whole lot more than GPU by now xD

Btw that Soyo board is just asking for a LEGO-remake imo!

If the mouse actually transforms it's alright.

Minimalist, conservative cases are easy to find.

Fractal Design has a full stable of them. Antec still offers many. Corsair, NZXT, CM, and many others have lots of conservative design cases of excellent build quality and excellent cooling options.

Finding minimalist, conservative internals can be more difficult - unless you are building an entry-level, budget oriented computer. And again, I think that is because graphics card makers, for example, are basically just rebranding AMD and NVIDA cards. To make them stand out, they have add flash and bling. And motherboards are restricted by ATX layout requirements, industry standard connectors and slots, etc.

My hardware is pretty odd so, colorful I may said, but I'm pretty happy …
black red keyboard, black red silver mouse, black red mouse pad and also headset, …blue fans inside the case, lol… big ass case with acrylic window…

in the other hand, hardware inside the case is pretty plain, Black motherboard, reference GTX 680 and black PSU, the unique thing that is not on the scheme is my Ram fan which is blue … kingston hyperx fan, blue finish, I was looking for the black one but was not available,

will upgrade video card for a Gigabyte G1 Gaming series soon, saving money for a 980 or 970, also looking forward a Thermaltake's custom water cooler kit, pacific RL but I will change tubing for black ones, I don’t like colors on my loops, distilled water and a silver coil is gonna be enough for me,

Regards,
