Why Valve isn't making games...

I have to admit the truth of it. Half Life 1 was better than Half Life 2.

Saying HL2 is overrated is like saying MGSV is overrated, both are unfinished games.

MGSV is overrated. :P Never saw such a weird narrative change halfway through. Literally just stopped development and copy pasted half the game.

I don't know which one is worse, to copy paste half of the game, or to just end it unfinished.

well... what can I say. You guys are speaking entirely the truth, and plenty more gamers outside of this forum feel the same way exactly. It's quite strange that Valve ignores the opinion of the majority like this. It seems that their tactics are a short-term profit measure because their reputation is decreasing by the month. Profit, profit, profit and then gone? Maybe that's what they are aiming for... o.O

As long as they don't drop steam and leave. I have got far too much time and money invested in my Steam account.

ah kids complaining about games that came out before they were born.

really love this gen. It's like there isn't a subject in the world they can't complain about.

why create when you can crap all over things?

lovely

While I was already of legal drinking age when it came out, don't you have someone to yell at to get off your lawn? Not everyone has to like the HL series. Nor does it mean they are complaining about it.

To play devil's advocate, what need there is for Valve to makes games since Steams prints money? And how long it took for competition to appear? Real competition? A decade?
Still hate them for it, though.

Just some of the many other excellent story driven FPS games from the same time period ...

Painkiller, F.E.A.R., Doom 3+ROE, COD 1+2, Quake 4, Far Cry 1, Riddick Butcher Bay, Halo2,

First one was a mindless monster grind, a niche of it's own compared to HL2, where everything from gameplay to story to sound to blah blah blah was thought out, second one is debatable because I would call it a generation newer game and it shows, Doom was received pretty poorly outside of graphics, COD cannot argue with that - a legend, however, Doom stuff goes for Quake 4 too, pretty and neat (bonus points for Strogification, though), but..., next one indeed is a classic, Riddick stayed in shadows (pun... intended?) and, finally, Halo 2's existance in PC world was... debatable... Fak ya Microsoft, at least it is coming to PC again.
I'm gonna give this one to HL2 :P

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay was indeed a fun game. I was always happy when I got at least a pistol in but by the end of the level someone had taken it away from me. I can't remember exactly but it seemed like I only had a gun for 10% of the game at most. Still it was a really good game. Got great reviews I don't remember why the game didn't sell well. Maybe poor marketing by Vivendi?

Half Life 2 is a great game. I just finished another replay on it last week. The only complaint I have about the game is that there were sometimes NPCs "helping" me. Generally they just got in the way like in tight corridors when I needed to move fast and they just blocked me while the combine were shooting me. argh note to Developers don't send us NPCs to "help" if we can't push them out of the way quickly.

With the Butcher Bay love going on, I wonder why The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena has been forgotten here and on one of the polls. For me it was a fantastic game, true to the Riddick name, and great fun. Mechanically it felt better than Butcher Bay, too.

Steam as a gaming service has given me a lot more entertainment than all Valve games put together ever did.

I loved the HL series just as much as the next guy but even if Valve did make the 3rd installment, I don't think it will be as coveted as the prior. The gaming industry is way beyond oversaturated these days and I think we get a lot more high quality games today than when HL2 was released. This makes it harder for games to stand out and rise to the top. I also think bringing out a L4D3 would cater more towards the mindset of today's average gamer.

Valve makes way more money selling games rather than making them. That being said I wouldn't mind getting L4D3... Please Valve!

When is the last time you played it?

Should be sometime around ~2014/2015, I think. Total runs I think... ~5-6 times?
Only one other game like that for me - Sands of Time.

Had me intrigued but it doesn't look like it's on sale anywhere. That isn't surprising considering it is licensed from film property. Film studios tend to neglect game properties...especially in that era before digital distribution became the norm. I'd have to find a retail copy from over a decade ago. :(

Valve can't count to three.

75% 1 star reviews. Atari publisher. Tages protection. Atari doesn't care.

Butcher Bay has similar reviews that it isn't working on modern operating systems.

The Amazon one activates on Steam I think Scratch that, this one is the Amazon direct download that runs from desktop shortcut. The Tages stayed active on the Steam version and limited install to 3 times. Brutal. Apparently it stayed part of the Amazon one too. The retail version had it too, so if you brave the Tages, just get the Amazon one.

I got my Assault on Dark Athena on GOG. If it comes back, then that is where you need to get it.

BTW, the Dark Athena included a nice little remaster of sorts on Butcher Bay that allowed it to run on more modern systems as well as look a bit better. I feel both are excellent movie licensed games, because they use the character and backstory, and make new stories. Vin Diesel does the voice acting, too. Dark Athena scored Michelle Forbes with a major part too.
