Will "poor VRMs" affect Ryzen 7 7800X3D performance? (not overclocking)

I am looking for an affordable microATX motherboard to go with my Ryzen 7 7800X3D CPU, Arctic Liquid Freezer II 240 and RTX 3080.

As of today, these are currently the cheapest AM5 microATX motherboards in the UK:

I bought the Gigabyte B650M K (top one in the table) for £100 on special a few days ago but have since watched Hardware Unboxed, who said the VRMs were "poor".

In reality, will the VRMs cause me any issues? I will not be overclocking the 7800X3D.

I will pay an extra 29% to get better VRMs if needed, for example, but it is obviously pointless if I will not notice a difference in performance.

Right after the gigabyte he suggests the asrock hdv board with one reason being the much better VRM. So maybe that board is a good choice.

Sadly the basement of the market has some junk stuff in it, but hopefully that one can run the chip to its rated spec.

You're not wrong, but the 44% jump from £100 (which is what I paid for the Gigabyte B650M K) to £144 (for the ASrock B650M HDV M.2) is quite large if it turns out the Gigabyte B650M K won't hold my 7800X3D back anyway.

and a 7800X3D pulls like 80W in all core workloads. a phone charger can run this CPU.

If you already have purchased the board, then test it and see if its held back. If it isnt, then it doesnt matter if thats your only concern.
 
7800X3D is a fairly low wattage CPU, it will be fine.
 
I've got the MSi Pro B650M-A Wifi, and it's an absolutely superb board! It can handle much hungrier CPUs than the 7800X3D. :)

With that said, the 7800X3D is a very conservative CPU in terms of power consumption, so I doubt you'll have much trouble with it in any board.

I don't think you should ditch what you have for a better VRM that you most probably won't need with the 7800X3D.

You dont need anything fancy at all to run an X3D. You have just turned your PC into an Xbox :)

Will it happen to you? Probably not, I think most motherboards can handle 80 watts.

The 7800X3D has a TDP of 120 W.
 
Personally I would never buy a high-end CPU to pair it with a bottom of the barrel motherboard....

Yeah, that means a 162 W power limit - but you'll never see it happen on the 7800X3D. The processor consumes 80 W maximum in a Cinebench all-core test.

Peak, so you'll only reach that with Prime95, R23 or CPU rendering. Gaming probably will be around 80
Nah, gaming is around 40, sometimes 50.
 
No you dont need any "expensive" overkill VRMs for a 7800X3D, so the cheapest board will do fine. I bough the Asrock B650M Pro RS WiFi for 150Euros and am happy with it. The only downside is with these "cheaper" boards, they dont support LLC (load line calibration). Which is important if you want to undervolt the CPU. I "only" can run a -20 all core PBO curve optimizer with my Asrock board and the 7800X3D, mostly could undervolt way more, if the board would support LLC. Only thing annoying about the Asrock is, it has a little bit of coil whine next to the CPU area, but you only hear it if the case is open and you go with your ears next to the board.

I have set a 75W PPT power limit with -20 PBO, and I get 18400 in Cinebench R23 and CPU hits around 73°C with air cooling (Endorfy Fortis 5 with 1 fan installed) in CB.

I had a wake up call with what seems to be bad MOSFETs! I suddenly found the motherboard off and literally shows zero life entirely when plugged in. Looks like I payed the price for running anything more than a Ryzen 5, pretty much. Looks like the Ryzen 7 3700X took out the MOSFETs! And that 3700X was still working fine in another motherboard.

Get a cheapo motherboard=Don't be surprised for it to suddenly lose power and never power on again!
 
I always have a fan over vrms on any board I use. Less chance of failing from heat is a good thing.

most cheapo motherboards are not worth it, i always try to aim for mid-range. my current mobo is bottom of mid-range, but still mid-range. got it for $109 on sale, and its been rock solid for me.

And, even that A620 just above, looks a ton better than the B450 motherboard that died on me.
