hello guys,
im thinkin to overclock again, because before my setup wasnt good,
now im using i5 6600k z170 ddr4 with Asus gtx 970 strix OC edition,
with old setup(i5 2310) i was able to get core clock 1463 and mem clock 8200mhz, i tested 1 hour on heaven benchmark and tested some games like shadow of mordor and gta 5,
but now i asked this question in other website forum that, is 80c under load temperature is normal? for long term gaming (Lt means for me is 1 2 hours)
is it safe?
then i got reply that, "temp is safe, but we cant measure VRM temp, strix models have hot vrams, OC can danger"
so is it danger that im overclocking my card? is im decreasing its life span?
how to make vram safe? please guide me im not expert like you guys are..

I dont o/c my gpus, the gains are too insignificant in my opinion.

It is fun to push the limits but i always clock them back after i've done a couple of benches.

yea i agree, the gain is obviously will not Big by increasing some mhz,
but some time 4 6 fps are big achievment, like today games, demanding GPU, at ultra settings, we get 50-60+ mostly on many high gpu,
when we get 53 the OC can fill it 60, that makes smoother gameplay than previous,
anyways i wish safe overclocking doesnt harm gpu :(

At 80ºC you might see some thermal throttle so try to keep your temp under that value. It should be safe up to 98 http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-970/specifications but that is the GPU other things like VRM might be affected by the overclock and die sooner that the GPU itself.
thanks, i tried to check vrm temp from installer version HW and GPUz, these havent shown me Vrm temp, but only HW portable version shown me Vrm temp, that was 47 at idle, but i dont know is it real?

Try setting up a fan curve. Raising the fan speed at regular increments lower down should keep that thing in the 60's, 70 max. And you don't need to blast the fans, just some regular increases at selected intervals should do it.

thanks alot, thats good idea, btw does enabling fan to run always fair speed will be fine for fan motor?

I have yet to ever have a fan die on gpu, even when they always ran, before the current trend of not running at low temperatures started. Doesn't mean it can't happen though.

I have a 970 also that I run fans all the time, and still barely hear it at full use in games. I also have no fear of the longevity of these fans.

Just to let you know ANY OC will reduce the life of ANY processor. Could be a day. Could be a year. Depends on the quality of the silicon and how long you run it OC.

Personally I haven't seen a real need to OC in almost 5 years. Especially not a GPU.

Just keep in mind your monitor will only display FPS as fast as your refresh rate. So if you only have a 60 MHz monitor you will only display 60 FPS max. If you are clearing over 60 FPS without an OC then it serves no purpose to OC other than Epeen.

thanks alot, you are right,
i also tried to check vram temp under load with no OC, it was 87 - 90, is that normal. its too hot ?

Same with CAPSLOCK... with his OCed GPU.

Come on guys, be consistent lol

Also, it appears most GTX970's have custom profiles to not allow the card to exceed a temperature where the throttle limit becomes a reality.

My MSI card, for example, will keep its self @ 75'C (76'C if it feels like living dangerously) and I've also noticed no degradation on this card in the time I've owned it. Its also been OCed to the clocks in my SysSpecs since I got it in November with +20mV applied to keep things stable.

YMMV.

I believe degredation will really only occur if you change voltage being supplied to the chip.

I have CPUs that have been overclocked 24/7 still running strong with no issues. My Q9550 continues to soldier on at 4GHz, no problem. OC'd GTX470 still going strong.

How about an E2140@3200MHz running OC from 2010, it is not used at full load, just stuff like browsing, playing casual games, music. But you never know what the future holds :)

whats inconsistent there?

@TheMailMan78 doesnt o/c his gpu ......neither do i.

He does however have a great o/c on his cpu from 3.4ghz to 4.5ghz

oh, what a surprise...my X5670 stock at 2.93ghz runs at 4.4ghz.

CPU/ GPU ...................completely different apples.

I didnt notice yours was the "GHz Edition", I missed the 'BE' part. ;)

However.....
"Personally I haven't seen a real need to OC in almost 5 years. Especially not a GPU."
^- appears to be confirming that he hasnt seen a need to OC any of his system, most of all this GPU, for a fair few years.... I may be mistaken though eh?:twitch:

Seeing as MailMan loves to be anal about things, he should down clock that CPU back to stock seeing as its effectively for nothing..................right?? Probably not lol :rockout::lovetpu:

And to be fair, OCing anything stopped being "dangerous" some years ago... so long as you dont go crazy with volts (hasnt that always been THE issue though!?).... or better yet; undervolt the item in question and never worry* about silicon death happening on your watch. :fear::clap:

*YMMV lol

Just run your fans at 100% but there is always a risk with any overclock
