My neighbor asked me if I knew how to reset the password on Windows 7. I told him I had a reset disk and I would get it to him.
I originally got the disk from an IT buddy, that has moved, and now I can't find it. It's been 3 years, or more, when I got it from him.

Never had to use it, long story.

So, what can I do to reset his password, in Win 7? I have helped him in the past with his laptop and cleaned it for him, picked up some virus/malware crap. I want to help but, I am lost now that I cannot find that disk.

Someone here, I'm sure, can lend me a hand with this?

I think last time I had to do something like that, I used Ophcrack. Breaking old NT/LM passwords on modern hardware is trivial and fast.
In my case it was an old W7 office PC from my buddy. One of his employees decided to set the password and immediately forget it (docs and DB were recoverable, but they had some paid software which was pain-in-the-ass to re-activate). I think it took me all of 5 minutes on my first try, with a simple alphanumeric lowercase hash table. If the password is more complex, there are many more places to get alnumspecial and various localized tables.
MD5 and newer is pain in the ass, since collision tables can get as big as >100GB

Also there are many free tools that can remove passwords from SAM file.
 
Well, got ahold of my neighbor today, just now finished. He had downloaded Win 10, before he messed up the password.

So, I could not use ntpassword. I found another program, with a free trail. It won't reset it without buying it but, it will clear it. I then went into BIOS and created the password there. He is now downloading Windows updates.

Worked but, took some time, running back and forth between apartments, because his computer won't boot from a USB. But, now I have 2 disk's, for win7 and win 10! Yea!

Anyway, problem solved in about 90 minutes. Bonus, Chipolte for lunch tomorrow!
