Yes, update to Windows 10. And use one of those utilities that kill the telemetry services, there is one from the makers of spybot, so a prety legit company.

Delete the contents of the folder, but not the folder, then set the folder to read-only?

I don't want this to turn into some kind of debate but, I wonder why don't you want to upgrade Freedom? Just curious.

Turn "BITS" service to off or disabled & windows update to manual. Whenever you want to update windows, security &/or optional patches, just turn on "BITS" & start Windows update service & let OS do the rest. You might have to uncheck anything win10 related manually if it's in the download list.

Turning BITS off is the easiest way to save your bandwidth, even if you have ample amounts of it.

I actually had a client call yesterday with an email problem. when I tried walking him through some steps, he says "Yeah, I don't see that there, but I think it's because it's updated to windows 10. It did that a few weeks ago. I came back in on Monday, and it said Welcome to Windows 10"..... I think I'd throw the computer out the window.

Is there any link with list of everything related to this for those who want to do it manually?

I don't know of any link, i found the article with the program on guru3d, it mostly deletes registry keys related to these services, if you find them you might be able to get away with it manually.

I kind of solved it myself. I can't be arsed with uninstalling this or that, so I just took ownership of c:\Windows\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Setup\ and then deleted everything related to gwx in Task scheduler. That should effectively block it.
Now I just need to find list of IP addresses to block that are related to all possible telemetry garbage and similar stuff.

Un reserve it in the windows app it should not re download then, although you probably have the folders there still but no win10 downloaded.

Might have to delete it the 1st time around but it worked for me and it's never re downloaded it.

Software Windows Server 2003 R2 as a Workstation now migrated to W10 with regrets.
I've just installed W10Privacy, originally a german tool, now with english and french. The number of tracking services you need to turn off has to be seen to be believed. I didnt know W10 was essentially spyware until I loaded the utility. I just wanted to turn off automatic updating... do MS not understand that people that use their PCs for working DO NOT WANT their computers to automatically download in the background then force reboot WHILE YOU ARE WORKING... and then... the updates work with a blank screen... and you have no idea if the PC has crashed or not. I h8 W10.

http://www.ghacks.net/2015/08/14/comparison-of-windows-10-privacy-tools/ is a good link to check your options. However, the list is already out of date... some of the features of each tool listed have already been expanded. But it is a great starting place to find utilities that you can use. I recommend turning everything off, or at least, as much as you feel comfortable turning off. I do hate the "radios" option... so if I turn it off (a global setting) then does my handsfree headset stop working... yes! But then every other app and malware also has access to radios. Grrr. Did I tell you already, I h8 W10?

If you are so paranoid your porn collection will make it to the interwebz, why even use Win10? And you think MS wont patch the loopholes these utilities are using to stop telemetry, or just reenable features on every update. If they would actually care about getting our data, they would have already reenabled it. This is a temporary fix at most, and telemetry will affect every os from 7 onwards really soon, not as an option in versions previous to 10 as it is now. Like android is any safer, having like access to 4-5 accounts at all times. And the biggest leaks still came from iOS/Apple. How does this make Microsoft the biggest bad guy around here, they joined the spying party pretty much the last, and they were never about open source and community being competitors with Apple on more and more fronts they pretty much follow every move the fruit cult makes.

While you are right on most of your points, mocking people for protesting a real issue is not productive.

Why would you make the insulting assumption he has porn? Many people value privacy, especially in the U.S. where it is one of our founding principles. And for the record, he doesn't want to use W10, he didn't even get asked.

Some people do not read the thread they read the last few posts then jump in feet first up to the sticking point which is either their inflated head or their Asshole ( often which has their head jammed into said orifice )

My only "problem" with hysterical posts like that one is their exaggerated nature. There's no fucking spyware, Microsoft (most probably) doesn't have any way to monitor files on your disk(s), and noone is watching your screen just because there are tons of connections related to some sort of telemetry crap. I'd "forgive" you if you are from America with all the crap that's going on over there, but for anyone else - go visit a psychiatrist.
And just for the record: I don't agree with the usual counter argument "what do you care when you have nothing to hide?". I just dislike conspiracy theories and hysteria.

P.S. Just yesterday some crackhead was trying to convince me "government" is spying on (and that's a FACT, only I won't give you any proof because everyone knows that) us and has secret deals with Microsoft and will knock on your door if you type blablabla... I had to leave (thank Satan it only takes a click when it's the internet).
