I really hate having to come here and ask for help, but I really am stumped. It hurts my geek pride. I have a PC with fairly modern hardware in it. It has a p8p67 pro in it. I have tried upgrading windows 10 on it twice now. Both times I have had the same result.

After windows finishes upgrading it goes to the log in/set up screen. I can't do anything. No keyboard or mouse input is accepted.

I will list some, or hopefully all, of the troubleshooting steps I have tried:
  • Move keyboard and mouse to different USB ports.
  • Try different keyboard or mouse.
  • Restart computer, repeatedly.
  • Google for related issues.
  • Update Bios, because why not.
  • Create boot media and revert to windows 7.
The windows 10 system restore boot media works fine with keyboard and mouse. All USB ports work in windows 7. I don't know what is wrong. I suspect that windows 10 is lacking a driver of some sort, but since the computer accepts no input I have no way of checking for which driver let alone installing it.

Please help me figure this out. If I have to revert back to windows 7 again, I am not going to get it upgraded to windows 10. Thank you in advanced.

You have a PS2 port keyboard?

I installed Win10 about 6 months ago.

About 3 months ago, after a random windows update, mouse and keyboard stopped working (actually all USB devices stopped working right after windows logo appear, before that logo all devices are powered up). I tried all solutions you mention in your post, nothing worked. I formatted computer with a Win10 April 2016 version I downloaded (then put my own cd-key) and forced updates off for a while. Problem solved. I only allowed updating recently again and no problems.

Edit: I also tried safe mode and I also had no USB input, so I guess it was a serious problem ^^
Edit2: fixed reference

i had this with win 7 after i used an old install from z68 going to z77 and the same going z87
i think its something with usb3.0 xhci mode.
set it to disabled during install or from smart auto to auto

other you can try is : Legacy USB Support to enabled

  • Disabled - USB 3.0 ports behave as USB 2.0 ports.
  • Enabled - USB 3.0 ports behave as USB 3.0 ports.
  • Auto - USB 3.0 ports function as USB 2.0 ports until the OS USB 3.0 driver loads, at which point they function as USB 3.0. If the machine is rebooted, the ports revert back to USB 2.0 until the OS driver loads again.
  • Smart Auto - Same as Auto, except during a reboot the ports aren't downgraded to USB 2.0.

Not at my current location. :(
The free upgrade is over. Or are you doing a clean install?
Both attempts at upgrading were done before the free upgrade ended. I have had the PC off since July 20th when I last tried fixing the thing. Trying to get back on it now.

@basco that is an interesting idea. I will play the motherboard bios usb settings.

Had the same problem, ended up having to use a PS2 Keyboard and wait to get into windows to install the USB mouse....

Ok. There happened to be a church yard sale today, of which I found a PS2 keyboard. With it I got windows set up and updated. Now the Bluetooth keyboard I was using works. No longer need the PS2 keyboard.

Still have a problem. I can't get a single mouse to work. This is with multiple mice. 2 of which don't require drivers. I tried updating windows again, tried multiple usb drivers. I restarted the computer several times. I tried multiple mice. I don't have a PS2 mouse to try with.

Do any other USB devices work? Did you try changing the USB settings in the BIOS?

i've seen this when the stock USB drivers went kaput. Only ever seen it once - i used a PCI USB 2.0 card and connected the mouse and keyboard to that, and manually updated the USB 2/USB 3 drivers.

Yes. Other USB devices work. The Bluetooth USB keyboard works. USB speakers work.

Yes, I tried USB settings in the bios. Nothing changed anything.

I will try and update those drivers, but that may be difficult with only keyboard navigation. HARDMODE ENGAGED.

Great. Turned it on this morning and now the PS2 keyboard won't work either.

Have you tried uninstalling ALL USB devices in DEVICE MANAGER, then rebooting and letting the OS reinstall all the USB drivers.

This alone has fixed many USB corruption problems I've encountered in the past. Windows fixes itself and loads fresh drivers.

You said in 1st post you upgraded W10 twice over W7.

Have you done a Clean Install of W10.

I have a laptop (old Gateway) that I use for web surfing. Had W7 and I did an in place upgrade to W10, 1511, went OK. Then I tried an in-place upgrade to the Anniversary W10, 1607, it would not install properly due to Windows old file from W7. I got a warning that I would not be able to revert back to W7 on the second W10 install. Failed on the first attempt, had deleted all partitions, inserted Lic Key. Second attempt deleted all partitions and install went ok, No Key.

Anyway, kept getting memory errors and crashing, 1st try, 1607 over 1511.
Did a clean install, did not enter LIC KEY, SKIP, and everything works fine now.

I have not tried this, and now I am not sure how I can since neither USB nor PS2 inputs are being accepted. PS2 works somewhat. I can turn the numkey, scrolllock, and capslock light on and off but I can not do anything else.

Edited my post above.

Do you have a spare HD to try from scratch, for a clean install?

Also, have you tried from stock Bios settings, no OC. Wondering if high clock is corrupting drivers on install. High clocks have also been known to burn USB ports.

I did not explain this earlier, but the computer is not mine. I am upgrading it to windows 10 by request while my friend is away for a few months. I have been a little slow about it. Given these circumstances, it must be an upgrade. If all else fails I will just revert to windows 7 again.

Is that possible now that the free upgrade is over?
So long as the bad install showed W10 Activated.

Once active for W10 all ok, Don't change parts out of the build, CPU, GPU, Mobo. Even HD or SSD change may cause issues. But I would try clean install on spare HD to eliminate failed mobo. If it goes ok, then you know its a driver corruption from W7 to W10.

Skip the Lic Key insertion when asked for it.

Yes it is but if you registered once it's fine. I did Win10 on my laptop a couple months back and rolled back to 7. I decided to try it again. I ended up doing a clean install. It was already registered I did nothing.

I found the real cause of the problem. There are no windows 10 compatible drivers for this motherboards USB host controller. I have tried downloading and installing various intel drivers but no luck yet.

This person has the same problem.

try the manual windows update tool in the W10 link in my sig - it shows up W8/8.1 compatible drivers for W10, and a manual selection might let you get the right ones.

@Mussels That update may help, but I can't use it with just a keyboard. I even managed to find a ps2 mouse. The ps2 keyboard works but not the ps2 mouse. Windows update isn't finding anything.

wasnt there some key combo or assistance mode you could use that turned the numpad into a mouse? i vaguely recall using it in win 98 era.
