ok im trying to setup windows 2000 on a second hard drive thats in my system, but when i boot from the disk it tells me to insert windows 2000 professional install disk in drive A:
wtf...i dont even have a floppy drive in my computer, the floppy controller is disabled so where is it getting this crap from? any ideas guy/gals?

maybe it needs some device driver that´s not on the cd (like when setting up RAID on nf4 boards)??

well it gets to the part thats press f6 if u want to install raid or scsi drivers and then it gives me that prompt ,and it does the same thing on my laptop which is 5 years old

this is what i get.......

anyways im dumping the entire disc right now to see if the D:\ drive has been remapped to the A:\ drive in dos

wheres alecstaar when u need him?.................lol:toast:

It needs a driver to install to install for your hard drive controler. I hate to say it but you have to have that A drive.

The option I see is.

Install it on a ATA drive install the drives to see your SATA then mirror the drive to SATA and boot on it.

I agree w/ p-jack on this one... driver needed!

:)

(F6 bootup stuff, absolutely)

why cant windows see my ide controller? and is there any way for me to add drivers to the windows install disc, because i have no floppy drive at all,and have no where of even finding one

ok i got it to work, just went to my uncles and took his win2k disc and it worked without a problem....i wonder why mine has such a problem booting? would SP4 make a big difference? mine only has sp1 and his sp4.....well at any rate its working now, thank you to everyone who helped

I would definitly do the updates, if only for security and stability!

I dont know whatelse the sp will give you other than that!

:)

Sure would... newer equipment types released in the timeframe between the two, & it appears that SP#4 has the .inf & .pnf extensioned files & .sys files (the drivers for your hardware need to be identified by the OS installation).

For instance, if you look under your %WinDir% (windows folder), you will see System32 subfolder & beneath that, a DRIVERS folder...

That is where .sys files (actual driver files) are... & the %WinDir%/inf folder is the files that are used to install the drivers & make them take effect/run!

Cool, but I didn't help as much as those guys above did, I only 2nd'd what P-Jack said first, identifying the problems as driver related...

now my only question is...does windows 2000 support dualcore cpu's?

what im looking for is an OS that i can strip down and use it just for benchmarking...i have my normal os xp MCE on my raptor and i have this second disk i want to use just for a simple os for benchmarking and gaming

Well, I know it supports HyperThreaded ones, TRUE dual cpus/smp setups, & odds are, DualCore CPU's I would wager! The "HAL" (hardware abstraction layer) sees to this, iirc.

(I have run it in the past on 2 SMP rigs @ home w/ 2 actual physical CPU's & on a HyperThreaded Intel P4 3.2ghz, so odds are PRETTY GOOD it will be fine!)

Windows NT based Os have been doing SMP, pretty much since their inception iirc, & I know for sure, since Windows NT 3.51!

(A neighbor & colleague of mine in Atlanta who worked for DEC prior to working w/ me had a Dual Pentium I 100mhz (2) CPU's running it is how I know this... I saw it back then, as far as 1996!)
