Hi its me again with another wierd issue (this ones really wierd)

My preordered windows 7 came ( a while back now) so I did a clean install a I was previously running vista x64 sp2 perfectly fine. So after about a week of running windows 7 with no issues at all I had this random freeze (twice) where well I can move the mouse cursor but windows wont respond to anything I do, im using a logitech g15 keyboard and its clock is a good indicator if the computers frozen as it stops updating (used to always happen when vista or xp froze) but it still runs fine when windows 7 was freezing.

After the first incident it didn't happen again until today after starting vmware player to use my old printer it would freeze(was working fine previously) when ever I tried using vmware so I uninstalled vmware but when trying to reinstall it windows 7 would freeze again with the installer stuck I can still move the mouse and highlight shortcuts etc but cant open anything including task manager nothing would happen the problem just got worse. I tried repairing windows with its disc but that was no luck after a couple of restarts windows 7 wouldn't even recognise my keyboard anymore (tried 2 different ones) I had to login using the on screen keybaord instead.

I just quickly did a reformat and partitioned my ssd and am dual booting a clean install of xp(using now) and a clean install of windows 7 and its freezing when I try to install my graphics card drivers now somethings very wrong Im thinking its my ssd as I noticed most of the time the problem occurs the hdd light stays on constantly. XP hasn't crashed on me yet but installing anything on it is really really slow but im not sure whats causing it, im pretty stressed out atm as im a little clueless and I got alot of university work to do C++ etc which is due in soon.

Thanks for any help

Perhaps one of your drives is starting to die, probably the SSD. If you have an extra drive laying around, try installing on it.

Yeah i agree with newtekie1, sounds like a dieing drive. Have u try safe mode?

* your psu could cause a problem too... i will never buy another hiper after it fried my mb. Which it cause issue before that too.

I have the same TypeR 580w powering Rig2 in my sig, it is a solid PSU.

You should have AHCI or RAID enabled in your BIOS for best performance. It doesn't matter which, but XP won't install unless you put the drivers on a floppy disk or slipstream them into your CD.

While you're tinkering with things you can boot linux or Windows XP from a flash drive in order to get your C++ homework done.

Thanks for the replies I can get into safe mode but I did a clean install so theres nothing to remove or change I ordered another drive to test out just incase, I will post the outcome when it eventually arrives.

Before I installed win7 I had ahci enabled in vista (loaded drivers and enabled in bios etc) but windows 7 had some issues after loading the ahci drivers the install would just fail after doing some googling I found out win 7 does that when you have a sata optical drive connected.

My ssd isn't very impressive anyway I dont think it benefits too much from ahci so I disabled it and win 7 installed fine. Thanks for the xp boot link I never you can boot xp from usb like that thanks :D.

Ok just a little update for others who experience this issue it seems that it was the SSD which caused the freezing (were you can move the mouse but can't do anything else) maybe it wore out I dont know I didn't defrag it or used it improperly maybe some are not as reliable as you would expect.

Im using a new caviar black hard drive and windows 7 is running fine again so far :) .

I am not using an SSD, and am having this exact problem. I am using a velociraptor that was working perfectly on Win XP 32 bit a few weeks ago, and am now having issues with Win 7 64 bit.

Don't use this plug for Logitech G15 - SirReal's G15

I am however using this app. Could you explain a little more please? Normally I would just do so...but I really like this app, a lot. Is this without a doubt the problem?

i've had similar issues with 7.

try running Ccleaners registry cleaner feature, it worked for me.

Flaming maniac: remove it and find out for yourself.

The problem is the freeze is infrequent, I have run for days at a time without any problems...then there are days like today that I have crashed 4 times in 12 hours.

my freezes never resulted in a crash, the system would 'pause' and eventually recover.

i think it was related to S3 sleep mode in my case, and a bad driver, service or codec (i'd just installed an older version of powerDVD and a not yet compatible version of the logitech setpoint software at the time the problems started)

EviLZeD,

It would be advisable to run a complete hardware test to confirm functionality. Also, Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://tinyurl.com/9fhdl5 . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to also check the threads available there for additional assistance and feedback.

I too have this mouse freeze for few secs then come back and the machine would randomly restart (might be because of OC too). My Board absolutely hates the Sony BlueRay Drive, It will take for ever to boot, I have to keep pressing reset and finally it will see. So sometimes in Windows (XP or 7) it will start the endless hunting loop and freeze. Then I installed a PCI-E Sata card and plugged the drive into that most of the freezing went away, except for the occasional mouse freeze thing.

Only wierd thing that freaks me out is Windows 7 machine wakes up automatically from Sleep without any events scheduled or anybody waking the machine. It will just wake up in the middle of the night and will not go to sleep for hours until I force it (the sleep timer is 20 min).

I thought its this machine, some crap is going on, now on my new Gigabyte board powerd machine too same thing. Both run W7 64bit Ultimate.
