Windows 8 Launches in October, x86 and ARM Simultaneously

People hate it more than necessary imo. It deserves critic but it has its moments.

Using Win 8 Consumer Preview on my business laptop for a week now and it works really well... subjectively, I think it's more responsive than 7 and although I was skeptical and initially annoyed with Metro on a desktop OS, I can say that it really takes a day or two to get used to it. And ergonomically it is much simpler to use than classic Start menu, because buttons are larger, their size as well as whole Metro content is customizable, and can hold more...

For now, I feel like that same tools (mouse&keyboard) can enable to you to do at least 150% more work with Win 8; also all my existing apps are working fine.

Win 8, regardless of usual Microsoft related rants (justified or otherwise), just seems to me as a good step forward. And also it seems very stable. I just had one single problem - domain joining, but I'll take it as a CP version "feature"...

And finally, I think that possible lack of field testing won't be an issue - Win 8 (x86/x64) should have similar compatibility "level" as 7 and you should even be able to to an in-place upgrade of 7...

Also, I did a clean install on my comp; next step: Win 8 upgrade of Win 7 (it worked ok for a VM, but we didn't test much).

I can't stand the logo. The window is pointing the wrong way. Started out as a minor annoyance but now I need a "fix" every time I see it

Actually, after I gave it a thorough thought, I completely disagree. I think that, since I am left-to-right reading person, for me it is more "natural" that logo starts narrow on the left and then gets wider to the right. I dunno, it just kinda feels "right"...

Windows 8, I do not see the real appeal at all. Kind of plain looking and looks a bit less user friendly to be honest. But this is more for tablets and touch screen users, Not the real desk top user. Metro

if i can ask, what does it offer to make it worthy of a release day upgrade on your main machine? especially if you are disabling metro?

Pretty much the same level of minor appealing visual tweaks that Win7 offered over Vista.

I prefer the new task manager and the new file copy/move dialog, as well as the ribbon in explorer and most importantly an up button.

Oh, plus I get it for free. If I didn't get it for free I wouldn't bother, but then again if I didn't get Win7 for free I wouldn't have bothered to upgrade to that since it doesn't offer anything worth the $150 over Vista.

Yeah, like I said, if you have to pay for the OS there isn't much reason to upgrade from Vista actually. Ignoring Metro, Win8 offers just about the same level of improvements over Win7 that Win7 offered over Vista.

And I'm going to tell people the same thing I told them when Win7 came out and they asked me if they should upgrade from Vista: "If you are buying a new computer and it comes with Win8, then get Win8, otherwise stick with what you have now."
