just recently i started having issues with windows media player 11 in my 32bit xp os. When i open it for any reason it wants to send an error report and shut down. I rolled back to 9 and it worked fine, then i updated and during the install it showed 2 other programs had issues and wanted to send an error report. one of them was drwatson postmortem debugger i didnt catch the other. . It willstill play whatever file i open as long as i dont click on the error report, and of course if i do click on either of the options the player shuts down. I ran my adware and antivirus and they found nothing, so...anyone have any ideas?

sounds like a codec problem.

you got any codec packs installed, like K-lite or DivX/quicktime?

i have quick time for the itunes, and im sure i probably have divx

i have :

divx codec

divx converter

divx plus directshow filters and i have quicktime

try uninstalling them, everything that could have a codec. that includes things like nero, and DVD ripping software.

odds are, one of them has screwed up a codec and WMP11 doesnt like it

ok, ill start with divx and see what happens, weird that 9 worked eh?

drm migrate exe is the other error reprt it shows

ill try it and post back! thanks mussels

no luck, so far at least. uninstalled all the divx stuff. cant seem to uninstall windows media player, will only let me roll it back. i guess more work on it tomorrow is in order

"bump"

Well, i have tried all i can think of to resolve my issue..and zip, ran numerous spyware, registry cleaners and inti virus software, my pc is clean, i also deleted anything i thought might have a codec, and still same issue. Tried reinatlling wmp11 and when it gets to around 25% it stops and then the error report for DRMMigrate.exe, after that error report for drwatsonspostmortemdebugger error report, it finishes installing and then same issue. click on media player icon and wmp opens, and shows error report. Frustrated!!

try googling - that link above that i linked to was one of many that i found with the exact issue you're reporting.

I cant help any further, as i dont use XP, or windows media player.

I appreciate your efforts! Ive read until my head hurts, i can tell ya that! Most people seem to think its a virus issue but its not a virus, so much crap to wade through!

its not a virus at all, its just WMP being crap as always.

from what i've gathered, its some kind of security issue with the DRM being installed.

My guess is that its related to people who've tweaked their OS - either disabling services, or Nlited installers. (that, or some program did it for them)

yeah, i optimized from the very guide on this forum in fact, but i didnt have any problems until just recently

ive been avoiding such tweaks for years due to random problems like this. the last big one i know of, was halo 2 - if you disabled the services that allowed two users to be logged on at once, the game wouldnt run.

Crazy. I guess i would do crazy things too if i was stuck writing code all day long!

well, if any one comes up with anything please let me know, ill keep working on it otherwise. and if i find the issue ill post it.

Place your XP CD into the CD/DVD Drive. Open up Run and type: SFC /Scannow
This will check XP integrity and should fix any problems it finds. This process does take some time.

both of those suggestions are good.

wookz: great codec pack (and what i personally use) but it wont solve his issue. we've narrowed it down to being a DRM/WMP11 specific issue, and not due to codecs.

eastcoast: good idea. i always forget about that, been so long since i've had to use it.

wow, never had to do that, never heard of doing it. So, just put it in the cd/dvd drive and open it like a regular media cd? in other words i dont have to boot from it? And also will it work even though its a really old copy of windows? it pre service pack 2 i believe, maybe even older, had it for years.

try getting a copy slipstreamed to what you have, it may or may not undo the service pack.

the idea is that it copies any files that are different between the OS and the CD over the top of whats on the drive, effectively "restoring to default" without the fun of formatting and reinstalling.

how might i go about doing that?
slipsteaming i mean?

google will have guides, or you could download one.

while we cant link you on forum, discussion of downloading just the ISO (no keys or cracks) is allowed.

Try uninstalling itunes, try to go back to version 8 if ya can, 9 will fuxor your system. If you use it for quicktime, installing the latest quicktime will have similar problems.
