Effects are minimal at best.

i don't think you can compare 03 with 08

anyway i download now and give a try

I was given a free copy of windows server 2008 through school but i haven't bothered to really do anything with it yet. I'm still not certain if it would be worth the effort installing on my regular home PC.

I was talking about XP vs Server '03, its minimally faster for some things I did... I found the same thing with Server '08 over Vista, a lot of extra work for a minimal effect, with enough work Vista could probably be equally as fast.

Server '03 is better to be compared with 64bit versions against XP x64 which I have not tested myself.

Performance wise I wouldn't know, though I like it. Both as server and as workstation. It doesn't bitch as much as Vista, though the main annoyances are still there. I basically use it because it's free for 240 daysm, just have to rearm the trial every 60 days.

As i understand is almost like Vista(aero and all the rest) but not ram hungry can you confirm?

I will install today evening when i finish at job

Server 2008 has superfetch disabled by default. The whole "RAM hungry" thing is basically based on that. Of course this is a false conclusion, though that's besides the point.
Aero and all other desktop functions are disabled by default as well. Though they are available from the add/remove programs thing.

interesting i play with all yesterday evening and i have all vista+server functions

except the driver for 3com network card i found all other and seems that 64 bit has a good support from manufacturers in some cases better than 32 bit

i don't like the Ram usage; is 37% in idle with aero and all vista functions on...

can i decrease it?

It's great how people want faster CPU's and more RAM but complain when it actually gets utilized. Unless you didn't turn Superfetch on I don't see an issue with 37% usage.

i don't complain but i don't have free physical memory the 37% is used and the rest is cached;

i think i turn on accidentally the superfetch because i use this converter: http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/2008/07/17/windows-server-2008-workstation-converter/

i'll disable the superfetch service and let's see i expect a big improvement

Has anyone used this converter?

i don't have the ready boost option any clue why?

Why disable superfetch? Just to see the number on the screen be lower? Superfetch speeds up your system by actually using your hardware. If you don't want your memory to be utilized, turn off your computer.

so the memory will be free for gaming for ex.?

The memory SuperFetch uses will be yes. SuperFetch caches loads of crap that you might use, when you use it it will load from memory. Though when other applications require memory it'll release it to them. So it's a good thing Vista uses so much memory. Other OSes have done this since forever, don't hear anyone about that though.

Thanks for all useful infos Dan ;i was reticent about vista till now but seems i'll use this os for a while.

As long as your fast enough to really run vista without it being doggy and have enough ram its pretty quick now. It's hardware issues and software incompatibility that causes issues.
