I was wondering if anyone can give a ballpark number for the size of the partition i should make on my harddrive for windows OS.....yes i am aware that this is an uber noob question rofl

How many programs do you want to install?

I have a 250 gb hd and i made 2 partitions. One of 100 gb for Windows and games and programs, And the other is 150 for downloads and pictures and other.

i find with 2003 that 17-25gb is plenty for an os+basic apps drive, installing critical apps and games on another drive or at least partition is a wize move as it will allow you to wipe your windows drive and reinstall any time you need without loosing your settings and such.

i use a 20 gig partition for windows and basic apps.. it takes up 7 or 8 gig..

i then use bart or win pe to copy it to another folder somewhere.. do it every so often and u will never be short of operating system plus basic apps back up.. or a new install if u want to bung it on a different drive..

its the small factor that makes it usefull.. its easy to copy 7 or 8 gigs and cos its easy it gets done.. he he

the only downside is u have to make sure bigger stuff dont get default installed to it.. else it soon fills up..

iv installed windows xp on a 3 gig hard drive with no cutting and i have 1.2 gigs left and i put everything else (programs ) on a 20gig. its my server so it doesnt do much but share files with me so.

I put it on a 15GB partition just to make sure it had room to grow if need be. You can probably get by with less.

unless u really are short of HD space i would say 20 minimum.. bin down the path of 1 gig.. 5 gig.. 10.. 20.. it u do it tooo small its a pain.. best to be a bit on the spare side.. especially if u work with large files.. downloads that need unraring and stuff.. or dvd isos..

HD space is cheap now so wasteing a bit dont matter that much..

OT - Interestingly, supposedly if you have two drives, putting Windows on one drive and heavy applications (like games) on the second drive will give you equal or better performance than a RAID array. The next time I have to install XP, I'm going to give it a try:

I have 2 partitions.
Partition 1 - 112gb (programs)
Partition 2 - 2.0gig (pagefile)
Yes, I noticed a slight performance increace by putting pagefile on it's own space.

I think they are specifically talking about two physical drives, not partitions that make the speed difference - as access doled out to the controller/cache on each drive.
