Wireless card died a tragic death; time for a new one.

So I was trying to get a better connection by getting usb extenders and mounting my wireless card high up. I got approval by landlord that I can stick it inside the vent above my door. Everything was all well and good until I came back into my room to see my card on the floor and windows not recognizing it across three machines.

RIP card, it took a 7 foot fall.

SOOOOOO time for a new one. Now this was the Rosewill 300mbps USB card that y'all recommended me a year or two ago and it worked decently, but I'm wondering is there a better one floating around that won't break my wallet. Whatcha using and recommend?

High up might not be the best placement anyways. Where is your computer relative to the access point?

You might be better off just getting a better antenna and mounting it away from any interference. Once you replace the adapter of course.

I'm the farthest away with a bunch of walls in the way, however for the 10 seconds it was mounted high up it worked pretty damn well.

I will look tomorrow thru my junk box, I may have a dlink usb adapter you can have, I believe it was a dual band one. Wife and daughter are sleeping now or else I would look now plus I have had a few beers. That is if you have not already purchased one......

You got me a godly power strip (I'm going to use it until it dies) you sure about the usb wireless?

I'll share details on how it was going to be used tomorrow. Blood sugar is ungodly high and I had to get my AM1 rig moved over to be my wireless adapter for the time being. Gotta love wireless sharing via ethernet.

how far you want it to reach? i've got a $30 one i got off ebay that can reach a few kilometers

oh and long term, a wifi client router could be what you need. used one to solve a friends dramas the other day - router connects to existing wifi, converts back to ethernet. not the same as a repeater, and works great for most situations (even if they're sharing one wifi link, its often better than multiple devices fighting for that same bandwidth)

I have a uh.. Actiontec Q1000 laying around that could work however I couldn't find a way to make it receive a connection. Think of it trying to reach 50 feet away but with three walls in the way. If I got the Q1000 to be incoming I could get my main rig and my AM1 to be wired to that letting my laptop(s) be wireless.

yeah i wouldnt use anything like that, i'd get something that supported wireless client out of the box (which means it doesnt segment your network or mess with performance), or something i could put DD-WRT on.

So to follow up, a package was waiting for me after work from @flmatter . An ASUS R65u router and a Dlink DWA-160 wireless card.

Got everything set up, we now have three wireless networks in the house with the roomie and I on the 5ghz band, anything that can't run 5ghz on the 2.4ghz, and the landlord on her own.

2.4ghz gets about 2.5mbps down. Not bad, kinda what I had before and the cap is 15mbps wired in. But the 5ghz band, well...


It was an orgasm of unicorn juices and chocolate. I have never seen 14mbps or anything close to that in my room

Steam downloads at 1.5mb, compared to my old 200kbps. TPU loads before I can look away now. Everything is beautiful.



So in the end I cannot thank that man who gave his goodies to me so I can do things again.
