We are curious about your thoughts on the subject, whether it would be a workable alternative to traditional advertising.

I have mixed feelings on the matter. I'm against distributed mining on the whole but would make an exception here given the choice.

I think its a shitty thing to do

I don't mind, if the miner is bound to 1 core and does not use tons of RAM, but I'm not sure if web-miners will cause any kind of access problems due to AV recognizing miner as a threat. I know at least some AVs now block all(or most) JS miners, not just coinhive specifically (which is still a legit miner, just abused by some shady people).

I have adblocking disabled for your site, and just for a couple others, for the rest adblock is on. So you need MOARRRRRR money? If i see something like parasite activity, i'll switch to new source of information. Thank you.

No ads on the forums, which is the question.

How much data does such mining use?

You need ads everywhere? When you need something, for example: you can't turn off any device, even if you go to sleep, and all of them playing ads nonstop, because devs so poor. Forums was ok for TPU without ads or mining, and now seeing how others MAKING MONEY on people... nothing personal, just greed

PS
I don't use this forum, its out of my interest, news, reviews and some knowledge base

If you have to I'd rather like the ads on the forums, rather than the miner. If the ads would be of the normal kind like on the front page that is. This is one of the rare sites I whitelisted.

I don't need it, but my feeling is that TPU probably needs it.

no i like to do my browsing peacefully.. :)

trog

NO PLEASE DON'T !!!! I understand you may need the income but the real question your are asking TPU users is do "we TPU users" want to foot the bill or would we rather advertisers foot the bill. Well the only real reasonable answer is we would of course want the advertisers to foot the bill and not us end users! Now I know not everyone will agree with me but I feel most will.

EDIT: Help foot the bill is what I should have been saying....

I think this is a pertinent question but would like to know more details before I can state my opinion

In all fairness, this is one of the few sites where i could honestly say most of the ad's are at the least targeted well. I mean everything that's advertised here is shit i might actually need or buy.

No.
I'd drop the site the same second.
Mining instead off adds Is a slippery slope. Especially with how crypto fluctuate in value.

I'm curious how it works, temporary script, permanent code? Would it slow down browsing more than ads?

Depends of this opt-in is configurable or not as I could then gauge whether it's using to much resources on my PC or not. Since I wasn't sure, I voted No. Could you please clarify @W1zzard ?

I think the best option is to have non-intrusive static banner ads. I would then be the first to turn off the ad blocker on TPU. Note that static does not include those ads that change every 5 seconds or so, which is equally distracting. If they changed once per visit and/or once every 20 minutes or so that would be fine for me.

I am really not sure, maybe an option for undecided in the poll could be good. There are so many questions but I am not against mining in general.

One thing for sure I can say is I do not want the mining to take up near all my CPU cycles leaving me with a slow PC and not able to multitask properly.

I would prefer ads that are not intrusive, and relevant if you need the income to keep this whole thing going.

A lot of people pop in for a few minutes, then pop out, and almost everyone at some point or another browses or participates by phone. So you would really not be getting as much CPU power as you might think.

I rarely post here but visit every day... and have for more than a decade. I block ads at the network, system, and browser level, but for all the years of my visits I have made sure TPU's ads get through. This site is an important resource for me. However, I would stop visiting if TPU decided to crypto mine while I visit. It's not that I distrust Wiz and TPU... it's that I distrust most other websites. If visitors agree to crypto mining while visiting a site, most sites will end up trashing all systems that connect. They'll take advantage of any and all resources available to enhance their revenue stream, and some sites will even place scripts that will continue the mining after a visitor leaves. Crypto mining should be left to those who do it by choice, not forced upon visitors who could loose control of their systems to unscrupulous site owners.

Just my 2 cents... now I have to go rest to prepare for my next post!

On further thought ..... as of late there is normally between 60-90 users on TPU and thousands of guest and and if you could bypass the TPU users and pass off to the thousands of visitors and bots I would agree you came up with a damn good idea.;):lovetpu:

EDIT : I look at it like this most TPU users that stay logged in are here sorting through the sites forums looking to HELP SOLVE other people who come here problems and that is very valuable to the forum and provides a good induction to long term member ship and also brings a value of its own to the site, but if I have to pay to stay logged in to provide HELP to TPU users/guests by monitoring forums for help needed, I'm not so sure how excited I would be to pay to do such.....

Annoying ads will be blocked by the new laws in eu. and i don't need more internet bandwidth. i dont like to pay money for products who has bigger price increase because off advertising.

I'd have to be undecided atm, not sure how all this stuff works or if it continues after I leave the site. More info would be helpful to those who don't know how the mining stuff works aside from the AMD user's who've tried to buy cards over the last 3 years lol.
