Hi All,

I have the X800 GTO² which I flashed0 up to the x850 a few years ago. I never got it to open up the extra 4 pipelines but because of the trouble I had with it I just left it alone.

Anyway, has been working great and I'm still happy with this card. My problem is I got 2 new Games, Call of Duty 5 World at War and Far Cry 2.
Both games require minimum pixel shader v3.0.... My card is only v2.0 :banghead:

Is there anyway of upgrading this? The games start up to a black screen with sound running. I can mouse over the buttons and hear them clicking so I presume the game is actually running.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Nope you're pretty much stuck. You have to upgrade to a newer card to play those games.

Thanks Magibeg... Real Shame though.

Any suggestions of a good replacement?? and as usual, on a small budget :(

The only way to upgrade to Pixel Shader 3.0 is to upgrade to a new card that supports Pixel Shader 3.0.

It shouldn't be to expensive to upgrade to a card that supports Pixel Shader 3.0 and get some better performance out of it.

Assuming you live in the US here are a few links to some inexpensive cards that fit the bill:

8600GT GDDR3 $56.99
8600GTS GDDR3 $39.99 AR
HD3850 $69.99

If you don't live in the US, you can look around for similar cards in your area.

I'm betting any money he has an AGP mobo. And in that case it might not be as simple. You can pick up x1650pro's for about $60, but that really is only on par and IMO a bit weaker than your x800.

I could be wrong, maybe you are running a PCI-E slot, and if you are there are a abundance of good upgrades on the cheap. If not I would highly suggest saving $150 ish and put off playing those games for a bit.

With hat $150 you can buy a aAMD 4x00+ dual core, asrock AM2+ mobo, 2gb ram, and something like a 3850. Might run a tad more than $150, but really would be well worth the mild investment. :)

Thanks for the recommendations... Will have a look at them and see whats available here (Bulgaria). Can't order of the net cause you never get damn post here!!!

This is the system I'm using.
Mother Board: Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI PCI E
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ (2 CPUs), ~2.2GHz
Memory: 2046MB RAM
Graphics: RADEON X800/X850 Series
DirectX Version: DirectX 10

If you can find a HD 4830 cheaper than a 9800GT. If the 9800GT is cheaper go with that. If you are going budget I'm sure you can find a 9600GT or a 4670 for cheap.

Would you be able to get a hold of the name of the motherboard you're running, or could you look at the card's sticker and look for PCIE or AGP in the model number? If you can tell if it's either one by just looking at it, that would be awesome.

Just by the fact that he said he has an X800 GTO², we know he has a PCI-E slot. The X800 GTO² only came in PCI-E.

Ah didn't know that, either way he said his obo model and says it has a PCI-E.

So my recommendation would be a 4830, but OC the thing, just turn up the GPU in CCC. But if you don't plan to OC then buy a 9800GT. But really buying a 4830 and cranking the clock up its very hard to match price to performance for any card on the market.

personally i think 8600gt/8600gts are too old and inadequate for the games you stated. Look around for 9600gso / hd3850 if your looking for cheap cards that will provide good performance (at least twice as better than 8600's)

9600GT or a 9800gt if you can afford it, even now you might be better off getting an old 8800gt or a 8800gts 512mb

your not needing a powerful card like me see you have a similar system to me expect ive maxed mine out i do not recommend running a gtx 260 in a system like mine lol

Great information.... now the hard part :) finding them!!!

Thanks to all for the replies..

Great card I had Sapphire x800 GTO but when NFS carbon came up and Splinter Cell Double Agent I moved to x1950pro because of the Shader thing.

He lives in Bulgaria

Thats the problem, a lot of companies simply don't shp to Bulgaria. Others that do, seldom manage to succesfully deliver, so I've given up ordering rom the net :(

Again thanks, will make a list and if the snow eases up over the next few day I'll venture down the mountain and see what I can get. Will post back just to let you know what I get and what I think of it ...

Just out of interest, my Mobo is Nvidia based... would it make for better graphics to go with an Nvidia card rather than ATI???

Again thanks for all the replies..

Only if it's an SLI board. Doesn't seem to make an impact unless it is. Don't quote me on that as I'm not entirely sure.

Hi All, found these two GC's today but not sure how good they are. Palit GF 9400GT Super+, 1 GB DDR2, 128bit and a Captiva GF 8600GT,512 DDR2,128 bit.

Are they worth a look? both reasonably priced. The reviews I've read online seem ok but then they usually are....

Sorry, should have said, none of the above are available... Not out this way anyway
