Well here is what happened:
Around 2 days ago, my monitor started playing up on me. I thought it was the graphics card playing up, so i took apart the computer, yet later realised that it was the monitor that was at fault (tested the monitor on my new comp)

I hooked up another monitor to the computer, but i got the "please connect a power cable to the card" error. Yet, a power dongle IS plugged into the card. I figured it might be a power supply issue, seeing as its only a 200W PSU (system specs are rig#2 in my signature), so i hooked up my old 400W PSU w/ 17A on the 12V rail, which used to power up my old computer with the X800 perfectly. Still, same error message.

It is the graphics card, because i hooked a 9800 PRO 128mb to the computer, also requiring a power dongle, and it booted up perfectly. I havent got another computer to test the X800 in, as this is the last of my AGP computers.

All help is greatly appreciated...ive aleady got a dead monitor :(

EDIT - If the card was fried, would it allow this error to come up? Or would it be totally dead?

I am 99.99% sure that your card can be fixed. And I know how to help you. You will need multimeter (doesn't matter what type). Later on it will be necessary soldering (unsoldering) and but the elements are very small. If you haven't soldering skills and equipment find somebody else (friend for instance) which can do the job :) .

Thanks dolf. I have no idea what a multimeter is, BUT, my brother is an expert on the soldering iron, so he can do all of that.

EDIT - seached multimeter on eBay and found a whole stack. Ill buy one, but i wont be home from the 14th-30th of January...unless my bro has a multimeter (he probably does), ill ask tomorrow when he gets up (currently 2:43am here)

Are these right though:

EDIT - Ok im not sure what to do now. The seller (from eBay) offered me an exchange (he offered 1 year warranty, and its only 8 months old). Anyways, he is in Honk Kong, and im wondering whether i should swap the card for a new one, or do this fix. Ill need the multimeter anyway, for my LCD screen, so paying for that isnt a worry.

Just a couple of questions. a) would this problem come up on everyones computer? (i dont want to send it back, and then when he tests it, it works for him)
b)Is it worth it? See, im quite happy with the current card (clocks to 540/610 & has the full 16 pipes unlocked)...although, this will be a brand new card and
c)How did the card end up like this? Like what have i done that has made the card fail like this?

Cheers :)

Absolutely that is the device. Take the cheapest one or just borrow from a friend. Probably you will need one SMD transistor but for that I will explane later on (after receiving the measured values).

Hey dolf,

Would it be worth it to fix this card (and run the risk of me stuffing up the card :p), or should i just get the exchange?
Just wondering whether the card will be dead on all computers, not just mine.

Thanks for the replies btw :)

beleive it or not, something similar happened to me.

take out your card and use a duster to clean it out, it should be quite dusty, then put it back in your mobo (PROPERLY, I might add. double and triple check. make sure the pcie latch is down and everything)

that fixed my prob.

thanks for the reply.

the card is pretty clean (i even took the heatsink off and cleaned), and ive put the card in/out 3 times (with the AGP lock clicking)

Ill test the card in another computer soon, and if it still doesnt work and the card isnt working, ill probably get it exchanged :)

Thanks again for the support/reply :)

Pinchy: that card has great clocks[when running:D ] if you exchange will run risk of not so great...... your bro can do the repair for you and you still have great clocks????? in the end toss a coin ;)

yeah thats true...but its also the risk of soldering the card and stuffing it up...

See, i really only run the card @ 520/560 (XT PE speeds) (only go higher for benchmarks), and even then, the computer doesnt game THAT much....so even if i have to keep it @ PRO speeds with 12 pipes, its still good. (the only main game played is counter strike:source, warcraft 3...which runs max when the card is a PRO). I now got my new comp to play all the latest games for me :D

Plus, i'll be getting a brand new card, and another full year of warranty ;)

P.S. lmao @
[when running :D]

then the coin's been tosssed :) the exchange get you what you need [less the shipping;) ]
and when you'r board you have somting to play with

yeah, it'll be less than $10 AUD to ship, so thats ok :)

The seller is really good. I told him my problem, and within 2 hours he emailed me back telling me he will exchange the card if i sent it back to him :)...and this was bought over 8 months ago from him ;)

SWEET:rockout:

I know its a risk but the x800 is a great AGP card and since they are disapearing I would just exchange it even if it doesn't clock as well you pretty much assured the card will work.

Pinchy it worth to try fixing it (it will cost you even less than shipping back - less than 1USD) if I am correct. If you fail you can return it later on but my opinion is that you have to try because you can receive a "real" PRO card next time ;) .

yeah lol, thats the only thing holding me back

See, before i got my new comp, i used the X800 for all my major gaming. Once i got the new comp, i was actually gonna sell my X800, cus it would have had not much use (brothers only rarely game on the other comp...more used for net surfing and stuff), but i decided to keep it. I was actually going to flash it back to a PRO because a)i didnt think the comp's power supply would take it, b)it a barebones computer, so it could do with less heat and c)XT PE speeds/pipes were totally un-necessary. The only reason i didnt flash it back was because i couldnt find its original BIOS, so i didnt want to run another risk :p

So really, i reckon even a 'real' PRO would do me fine, and getting a new card with a whole new warranty really appeals to me. Tell me what you think ;)

BTW - with the problem ive got, it'll come up on any computer wont it...not just mine? Because i dont wanna send it back to the guy if it works on his comp :p (Although i think ill be testing the card tomorrow)

Thanks to everyone who's posted so far, and dolf for all the help :)
