This card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150394

The cooler is one piece of aluminium that covers the GPU, memory, and VRMs. I have this card and will post a pic later. At 50% fan speed it idles at 65C. The part of the cooler where the GPU contacts is copper and has heat pipes on top of it like the reference cooler. The cooler is about 1 inch shorter than the reference cooler and the heat sink inside the cooler is also shorter to accommodate the fan.:shadedshu

Right now I have the fan at 68%(loud)its idling at 48C and I applied new thermal paste(AS5).

This is the same card with the reference cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150352

Anyone have a XFX 4870 reference cooler?:p

Edit: Reaplied thermal paste and added 120mm fan.:D temps are better now.:)

I wear my headphones so the noise is nonexistant.

On a bare GPU/CPU die you want to spread a thin even layer across the entire die. If the GPU/CPU has a IHS covering it a small dot in the center is fine. :)

I am not sure but u could PM MKmods..... He might have a spare vaporX or a Toxic cooler for the 4870...I recently sent him 2 toxic coolers for some comparisons and he might be willing to let u have one, once he is done with them. I gave them as a gift, so its up to him! :toast:

I applied the thermal paste perfectly fine, it only gave me a 1-2C drop what I expected..

Also I've used MX2 and AS5 and there is no noticeable difference to me.

Edit: I reaplied the thermal paste just for the heck of it, same temps still..

I ended up getting the 1gb version off of ewiz :toast: Got it today, and it has the non-reference reference looking cooler. It works pretty good for me!

I can barely hear it with it on 100% fan speed

I have 2 XFX 4870 1GB cards and one is the stock reference design and the other is the new XFX design...both seem to work good but the reference AMD/ATI cooler seems to do a slightly better job.

It also didn't come with a sticker on the side of the card, I found that a little weird.

Terribly odd really. I mean I'm running the Sapphire non-reference cooler. now granted I used RADedit to up mine to whatever it was using for its "automatic" setup.Mine idles at around 47(I haven't taken off the cooler and redone the paste and the fan is only running at 36% on idle.

Hey man does yours clock really good too? I maxed out the core at 790MHZ in CCC and it's totally stable. I got the memory at 1005mhz, probably not gonna try for higher as it's already stupid high. I'm gonna DL GPUTool or something in a few mins and see how high I can get the core :toast:

Sofar mine runs at 790mhz perfectly stable and I have the memory at 1000Mhz. I played 2 hours of GTA4 at all high settings@ 1920x1200. I had no problems at all. I had the fan speed at 80% and the card never went over 62C load.:rockout:

However if I put the fan speed down to 40% WHILE the card was IDLING and the core was at 75C IDLE!!!

I'm thinking about getting another of these cards. :)

right now with the card Idling with the fan speed at 62% the Idle temp of the GPU is 50C.

My old XFX card (ATI ref design) will sit @ 820/1100 all day long....this newer version (XFX design?) doesnt seem to like the heat as much and I've only had it up to 800/1050.

I will however be changing over to my blocks (finally) so I'm sure I can manage more from it with heat being less of a problem. :)

At such a good price, I ordered three of these. I thought I was ordering original cooler but got these. I'm impressed thou.

It has a thinner base and is much lighter than the original. It's well machined aluminium, and makes very precise contact with the DDR5 and VRM's. And they use the thermal paste squares instead of the rubbery thermal pads found on the reference coolers. The paste squares offer better thermal transfer IMO.

The fan is much quieter than the original. It tops out at 3,200rpm. Reference bios has idle clocks at 600/900 @ 1.263v and fan hovers around 50%. This may seem high but the fan is rather quiet as it's only doing ~1,650 rpm.

I modded the bios for all cards and am very pleased. Idle temp dropped from 63c to 43c, gaming in the mid 60s. I encounter only occasional screen flicker which doesn't bother me at all. It's worth having 3 cards running in the low 40's. Some screens:

So thumbs up to XFX on this card. Despite the obvious attempt to save $ using a redesigned cooler, it's still a good card and is very good quality.

Anyone know a good waterblock for the non reference 4870's apart from the maze 5?

Any blocks that also cover the ram?

I like the cooler XFX use on their 4830s better.. looks nicer, doesn't sound like a jet engine unless you ramp it up over 95%, and surprisingly it doesn't do a bad cooling job.
